    Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for localizing and determining orientation of an insertion end of a probe have diagnostic or therapeutic utility within a biotic structure. The apparatus includes a probe with a directional acoustic transmitter attached to a tip of the catheter and a power supply for energizing the directional acoustic transmitter. The apparatus also includes an ultrasonic imaging system for displaying positional information of the catheter and an orientation indicating representation of a signal from the directional acoustic transmitter.
