  • Patent number: 4771903
Abstract: A process for hermetically sealing a glass container with contents therein is disclosed. The container has a mouth surrounded by a rim, at least a portion of the exterior surface, including the rim, of the container having a film coating of thermoplastic polymer thereon. The first step in sealing comprises substantially reducing the amount of contents' residue from the container rim. A closure is then applied to the rim. This closure is comprised of a layered material, having a thermoplastic polymer layer and a metallic layer, the thermoplastic layer contacting the thermoplastic polymer coating on the container rim. The thermoplastic polymer layer and the thermoplastic polymer coating consist essentially of mutually compatible polymeric materials. The closure is then heated in contact with the rim, to heat seal the closure to the rim coating and to seal the contents hermetically within the glass container.

  • Patent number: 4220118
Abstract: A spray hood is provided for use in coating glassware such as bottles. The hood defines a tunnel for straddling a conveyor and has baffles on walls of the tunnel for adjustment horizontally and vertically to define a space about at least lower parts of the glassware where coating is to be sprayed. A coating supply system is coupled to the walls for spraying in the space and includes nozzles in two groups: one group on one side near an entrance end of the tunnel; and the other group on the other side near an exit end of the tunnel.

  • Patent number: 4134746
Abstract: This invention is directed to a process for strengthening glass articles and, in particular, glass containers such as beer bottles. The invention is directed to a process whereby the article is sprayed over its surface with a solution containing potassium fluoride and a metal acetate which prevents etching of the surface by the fluoride ions. The article is then treated at an elevated temperature to allow exchange of the potassium ions for the sodium ions in the glass.
