  • Patent number: 4740369
Abstract: Sunscreen compositions are described which comprise a carrier having incorporated therein in an amount effective to provide protection against the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation a compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein X is --O-- or --NH--; R, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, is H, CH.sub.3, --CN, --C.sub.2 H.sub.5 and OH, --OCH.sub.3, --OC.sub.2 H.sub.5 ; R' is selected from an alkyl, alkenyl, aryl or alkyl substituted aryl radical having 5-18 carbon atoms and the radical OR.sup.5 where R.sup.5 is an alkyl, alkenyl, aryl or alkyl substituted aryl radical having 6-18 carbon atoms.

  • Patent number: 4072628
Abstract: Regeneration of supported ruthenium catalysts. A supported ruthenium catalyst which has been used for conversion of carbohydrates to polyhydric alcohols is regenerated by contacting the catalyst with an aqueous solution of a mineral acid, such as sulfuric, hydrochloric, or phosphoric acid. Dilute acids, e.g., 0.01 N to 0.5 N, are preferred.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 30, 1976
Date of Patent: February 7, 1978
    Assignee: ICI Americas Inc.
Inventors: Walter M. Kruse, Leon W. Wright
  • Patent number: 3965199
Abstract: Disclosed is a process for the production of polyhydric alcohols from carbohydrates. Also disclosed is a catalyst comprising finely divided metallic nickel and finely divided tungsten oxide supported on an inert carrier wherein the metallic nickel is from 15 to 45% by weight, based on total weight of catalyst, and wherein the tungsten oxide is from 0.5 to 16% by weight, based on the total weight of catalyst.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 10, 1974
Date of Patent: June 22, 1976
    Assignee: ICI United States Inc.

  • Patent number: 3963789
Abstract: Process for the conversion of carbohydrates to polyhydric alcohols. Carbohydrates, such as glucose and cornstarch hydrolyzate, are converted to polyhydric alcohols by hydrogenation at high pressure in the presence of a catalyst comprising ruthenium on a crystalline aluminosilicate clay. The clay is preferably acid treated and calcined prior to impregnation with ruthenium. Clays containing a major proportion of montmorillonite are preferred.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 12, 1974
Date of Patent: June 15, 1976
Inventors: Walter M. Kruse, Leon W. Wright
  • Patent number: 3963788
Abstract: Process for the conversion of carbohydrates to polyhydric alcohols. Carbohydrates, such as corn starch hydrolyzate, glucose, and invert sugar, are converted to polyhydric alcohols by hydrogenation at high pressure in the presence of a ruthenium-containing alumino-silicate zeolite catayst in which the silica/alumina mol ratio is greater than three, and in particular ruthenium on a Y type zeolite in the hydrogen form. This acid stable catalyst gives good conversion with high selectivity to sorbitol when corn starch hydrolyzate in aqueous solution is used as the starting material.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 5, 1974
Date of Patent: June 15, 1976
Inventors: Walter M. Kruse, Leon W. Wright
