  • Patent number: 5260283
Abstract: Wheat bran fiber is used to alter the enterohepatic recirculation of estrogens leading to an increased fecal excretion of estrogens together with a decrease in urinary excretion of estrogens. Increased lipid excretion is also found. Thus wheat bran fiber is useful to remove estrogen and lipid in mammals.

  • Patent number: 4752021
Abstract: A garment display device having various adjustable features is provided for displaying historical garments in a realistic manner. The device employs telescoping members held upright by a weighted base. Adjustably positionable upon the telescoping members are a waist form member, a hip form member and a torso shape. The hip form member has a number of bendable elongated ribs radially emergent from a center hub on an upright telescoping member, and adapted to display a dress in proper deployment. The uppermost upright telescoping member is deformable in a manner to dispose the torso shape in various life-like poses.

  • Patent number: 4325078
Abstract: An apparatus and method for providing limited access to broadcast television programming in a CATV System wherein each television subscriber is provided with a converter for converting broadcast television signals into signals suitable for reception and display by a conventional television receiver and means for disabling the converter from producing TV compatible signals selectively activated by a switching device. A magnetic card reader reads the data on a program card inserted by the subscriber and compares it with a reference data record stored in a memory to determine if the program card is valid for the program sought to be viewed. If the card is valid a timer is actuated to cause the switching device to enable reception of the broadcast program while obliterating the data on the program card so that the card cannot be reused. The reference data record may be variable with time so that a program card will only be effective for enabling program viewing during a predetermined time period.

  • Patent number: 4299235
Abstract: A method and apparatus for measuring the cost of physical activity includes the steps of correlating the integrated EMGs of selected muscles and the heart rate of an individual to oxygen consumption. Once correlated the integrated EMGs of the selected muscles and heart rate are measured while the individual is freely ambulatory. The physical and emotional cost of the physical activity is then measured. This cost is compared with the cost of the normally functioning muscles to determine the cost of a functional disability.

  • Patent number: 4235376
Abstract: There is disclosed a dispensing apparatus which is mounted at the rear of a tractor and which employs two friction wheels mounted on a common frame. The frame is pivotally mounted so that an operator can cause the friction wheels to engage the rear wheels of the tractor. The friction wheels are attached to a rotatable shaft which contains a pulley. When the friction wheels engage the tractor wheels, the pulley rotates and by means of an associated belt, causes rotation of a dispensing cylinder associated with a cannister or hopper containing chemicals to be dispensed. Means are provided for adjusting the tension on the belt as well as for engaging said friction wheels in constant contact with the tractor wheels. The apparatus further incorporates a selectively actuated aerator assembly which is used in conjunction with the dispensing apparatus to maintain and perform lawn maintenance services.

  • Patent number: 4148303
Abstract: A method is disclosed for detecting the intentional disabling of muscles which includes the steps of measuring the neuromuscular activation in a disabled muscle and comparing the neuromuscular activation of the muscle with that of a control muscle when performing a specified work task. To perform this comparison, an integrated electromyogram (emg) of a muscle which is synergist to the disabled muscle is compared with the integrated emg of a synergist control muscle wherein the control muscle corresponds to the disabled muscle but is on the opposite side of the human body or is the same muscle in a control population. Where only one muscle of a given type exists, the integrated emg thereof is compared with the norm of a matched population when performing the work task.
