Patent number: 10940345Abstract: A tank on a firefighting aircraft initially is loaded with water. A polymer gel emulsion vessel is provided on the aircraft, but is not activated and mixed with tank water until such polymer gel preparation is initiated by an operator. When initiated, a pump pulls water from the tank and doses it with gel emulsion. Double elbows and/or the pump impeller fully activates the polymer gel. The activated polymer gel is mixed within the tank by one of a variety of systems including mixing paddles or sparging with gas. In one embodiment, a hollow tower of telescoping form has a float to keep an upper end near a surface in the tank and a sparging gas entry is a controlled distance below the surface, such that gas of limited pressure, such as from a ram air inlet can sparge and mix the water and activated polymer gel emulsion effectively.Type: GrantFiled: February 5, 2019Date of Patent: March 9, 2021Inventor: Leonard E. Doten

Patent number: 10232203Abstract: The system includes an intake assembly upstream of a pump within the bucket which selectively uses an outer port for drawing water outside of the bucket into the system and an inner port for drawing water from within the bucket into the system. A polymer gel port is interposed between the intake assembly and the pump for combination, mixing and activation of a water and polymer gel emulsion combination within the pump. A fill assembly is provided downstream of the pump which can selectively direct water back into the bucket. A discharge assembly is also provided downstream of the pump which leads to a nozzle or other outlet for water and/or polymer gel emulsion from the system. A control valve selects between delivery of water and/or polymer gel emulsion back into the bucket through the fill assembly or out of the bucket through the discharge.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 2016Date of Patent: March 19, 2019Inventor: Leonard E. Patent number: 10046186Abstract: The system includes a pod suspended beneath the aircraft and above a water fillable and emptyable bucket. Polymer gel emulsion preparation equipment is included at the bucket. The pod includes an elongate shaft for carrying structural loads between a cable extending down from the aircraft and the bucket. The pod also includes a polymer gel tank. A polymer gel pump delivers polymer gel to the polymer gel emulsion preparation equipment within the bucket when required. The pod is configured to include a pathway for routing of various lines from the aircraft down to the bucket, and past the polymer gel tank. Sub-systems for filling the polymer gel tank and for equalizing pressure within the polymer gel tank are also included with the pod, so that the pod provides a modular polymer gel storage for use with polymer gel emulsion preparation equipment within a bucket suspended beneath the aircraft.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 2015Date of Patent: August 14, 2018Inventor: Leonard E. Patent number: 10046187Abstract: A display provides optimized situational awareness to firefighting command personnel within a wildfire theater. Lidar scanning data provides a digital elevation map of the wildfire theater for the display. Geographic features such as lakes, roads, power lines and structures can be overlaid on the display. Lidar data utilizing multiple reflection signatures can be interpreted to represent fuel density and/or canopy height and such information can also be included upon the display. A burn area and active fire edge can be sensed by infrared scanner data and overlaid upon the display. The display can be utilized for input of firefighting command instructions, such as in the form of vectors or other annotations placed upon the display and correlated with airborne firefighting resources to be dropped at designated locations. Data provided to the display can be periodically updated to reflect the current situation. Firefighting resources are thus most effectively assigned.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 2015Date of Patent: August 14, 2018Inventor: Leonard E. Doten

Patent number: 9908622Abstract: The system includes a snorkel leading from an intake up to a tank borne by an aircraft. A feed pump in the intake draws water up the snorkel to the tank. A polymer gel emulsion reservoir supplies polymer gel upstream of the feed pump for addition and activation of the polymer gel emulsion with the water. A separate pump within the tank provides for selectable recirculation within the tank and/or discharge out of the tank, such as out of a nozzle. Polymer gel emulsion can optionally be supplied at the tank pump rather than the feed pump for delayed addition of polymer gel emulsion to water carried by the aircraft.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 2015Date of Patent: March 6, 2018Inventor: Leonard E. Doten

Patent number: 9656108Abstract: A tank on a firefighting aircraft initially is loaded with water. A polymer gel emulsion vessel is provided but gel emulsion is not activated and mixed with water in the tank until such polymer gel preparation is initiated by an operator. When initiated, a pump pulls water from the tank and returns water back to the tank with a dose of gel emulsion supplied therein. Double elbows and/or the pump impeller fully activates the polymer gel. The activated polymer gel is mixed within the tank by one of a variety of systems including sparging with air, routing of return water from the pump through nozzles and providing a baffle for generating circulatory mixing flow within the tank, or utilizing a mixer element which moves dynamically within the tank. Hydrodynamic forces associated with the aircraft passing over a body of water can power dosing of the water with polymer gel emulsion.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 2014Date of Patent: May 23, 2017Inventor: Leonard E.
