Patent number: 10006984Abstract: Systems and methods for determining a location of a wireless device are disclosed. In one embodiment, a method of operation of a central processing node for a shared cell of a cellular communications network includes obtaining signal strength measurements for a signal received from a wireless device at multiple Reception/Transmission (R/T) points in the shared cell. The signal strength measurements are simultaneous signal strength measurements made on signal discrimination space resources in an uplink of the shared cell. Further, the signal discrimination space resources are matched to capabilities of power meters utilized to generate the signal strength measurements. The method further includes identifying one or more of the R/T points having the best signal strength measurements and estimating a location of the wireless device based on known locations of the identified R/T point(s).Type: GrantFiled: June 18, 2014Date of Patent: June 26, 2018Assignee: TELEFONAKTIEBOLAGET LM ERICSSON (PUBL)Inventors: Leonard Lightstone, Garry Irvine, François Cardinal, Peter Pääkkönen, Adrien Comeau

Publication number: 20170150516Abstract: A node for determining a communication resource management algorithm is provided. The node includes a communication interface configured to obtain a measurement characteristic from a network device, and a circuitry containing instructions. When executed, the instructions cause the node to search a container repository to determine the existence of a measurement category for the measurement characteristic obtained from the network device, and when the container repository includes the measurement category for the network device, determine the communication resource management algorithm based at least on the measurement category.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 8, 2015Publication date: May 25, 2017Inventors: Alex STEPHENNE, Leonard LIGHTSTONE, DongSheng YU

Publication number: 20170111857Abstract: Systems and methods for passive proximity detection of wireless devices in a cellular communications network are disclosed. In one embodiment, a supporting radio access node in a cellular communications network including one or more coverage radio access nodes in a coverage layer and one or more supporting radio access nodes in a supporting layer is disclosed. In this embodiment, the supporting radio access node detects a ranging signal transmitted by a wireless device while passively listening for a ranging signal. The supporting radio access node receives ranging assistance information from an anchor radio access node of the wireless device in the coverage layer and determines a range estimate for a range between the wireless device and the supporting radio access node based on the ranging signal transmitted by the wireless device and detected by the supporting radio access node and the ranging assistance information.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 3, 2014Publication date: April 20, 2017Inventors: Leonard LIGHTSTONE, Christopher RICHARDS, Edward MAH

Patent number: 9485677Abstract: A method for determining whether a radio unit in a shared cell configuration is hearable by a user equipment is provided. Transmission of a probe message to the user equipment by the radio unit is caused. The probe message invokes a probe response from the user equipment if the radio unit is hearable by the user equipment on a downlink channel. The radio unit is hearable by the user equipment if the downlink channel performance between the radio unit and the user equipment meets a predetermined signal criteria. An uplink channel associated with the user equipment is monitored for the probe response from the user equipment after transmission of the probe message. Hearability data associated with the user equipment is determined based on the monitored uplink channel. The hearability data indicates whether the radio unit is hearable by the user equipment the downlink channel.Type: GrantFiled: January 8, 2013Date of Patent: November 1, 2016Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Leonard Lightstone, Christian Skärby

Patent number: 9408095Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for autonomously determining overlapping coverage in a cellular communications network. In one embodiment, the cellular communications network is a heterogeneous cellular communications network. In one embodiment, a network node of a cellular communication system obtains information (e.g., pilot reports) indicative of a perceived coverage of one or more covering cells at wireless devices within a measuring cell over a measurement interval. The network node determines overlapping coverage of the measuring cell and the one or more covering cells based on the information indicative of the perceived coverage of the one or more covering cells at the wireless devices.Type: GrantFiled: February 5, 2014Date of Patent: August 2, 2016Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget L M Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Leonard Lightstone, Christopher Richards, Edward Mah, Karl D. Mann, Adrien Comeau

Publication number: 20150163022Abstract: It is presented a method of allocating resources of a first uplink subframe being part of a radio frame, each resource being a combination of a frequency range, and a time slot and a code. The method is performed in a network node and comprises: determining a first set of resources allocated for Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request, HARQ, feedback in the first uplink subframe; determining a second set of resources allocated for HARQ feedback in a second uplink subframe being part of the radio frame; identifying free resources in the first uplink subframe by identifying resources of the second set of resources which have no correspondence in the first set of resources; and allocating when a free resource is found, at least part of the free resources to a use other than HARQ feedback. A corresponding network node is also presented.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 6, 2012Publication date: June 11, 2015Applicant: Telefonaktiebolaget L M Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Anders Johansson, Leonard Lightstone, Alfred Schmidt

Patent number: 8965388Abstract: A method and system for determining, for a transmission time interval (TTI), an amount of resource units to be allocated to each cell served by at least one module in a wireless communication network are disclosed. The allocation is based on an estimated resource consumption of each cell, a resource limit of each cell and resource limits of the at least one module. Publication number: 20150023235Abstract: Disclosed herein are methods for using new energy-saving subframe structures, as well as corresponding apparatus that are configured to exploit these energy-saving subframes. In these energy-saving subframes, some, but not all, of the individual OFDM symbols in a subframe are inactive, meaning that no signal is transmitted during at least a part of the symbol time of the blanked symbols. An example method according to these techniques may be implemented in a radio transceiver, such as an LTE eNodeB, and comprises transmitting, in a first symbol time of a downlink subframe that comprises a plurality of symbol times, a codeword indicating that the downlink subframe includes at least one inactive symbol time. The method further includes transmitting data during at least one but fewer than all of the remaining ones of the plurality of symbol times in the downlink subframe. Corresponding techniques for receiving the energy-saving subframes are also disclosed.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 16, 2013Publication date: January 22, 2015Applicant: TELEFONAKTIEBOLAGET L M ERICSSON (PUBL)Inventors: Leonard Lightstone, Christian Skärby, Franz Heiser
