This emergency contact information is automatically integrated from the address book by identifying contacts in the address book that have been designated by the owner of the device as emergency contacts. The device can automatically update the emergency contact information by periodically polling the address book to ascertain whether any changes have been made to the contact information.

The method includes receiving a request to adjust a notification setting which causes the electronic device to display a notification module on a display of the electronic device. The notification module includes a plurality of control portions each corresponding to a notification setting which can be adjusted within the corresponding control portion. The method further includes detecting a selection proximate to a control portion and inputting a notification setting change based upon a selection executed within one of the control portions. The notification setting is adjusted in response to the notification setting change.

On the other hand, while the character count is greater than or equal to the warning count value, the device causes the number of allowed characters remaining for entry in the message to be presented. The message may be transmitted via a wireless network via a short message service (SMS). In one example, the number of remaining characters is provided in an alert bar, which is presented by being set in motion from an initial hidden position behind the message composition field to a final revealed position, with intermediate positions therebetween.

By providing SMS-specific categories with the IM contact list interface SMS integration operations such as routing of SMS messages can be controlled to avoid degrading the user's experience.

The free-flowing interface can be optionally enhanced by displacing icons onscreen, when dragged or when collisions occur between icons, based on at least one of a virtual inertia parameter, a virtual friction parameter and a virtual collision-elasticity parameter to create more realistic onscreen motion for the icons.
