  • Patent number: 5251197
Abstract: A writing/erasing method for use in connection with homotropic organic optical media is disclosed and claimed. The method includes writing on a thin film with light of a first linear polarity to induce birefringence along the direction of an optical axis of the film's initial state followed by erasing the film with light of a second linear polarity. The first and second linear polarities are angularly offset with respect to one another, preferably by 90 degrees.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 13, 1992
Date of Patent: October 5, 1993
    Assignee: Hoechst Celanses Corp.
Inventors: Hartmann F. Leube, Leroy McKenzie
  • Patent number: 5246747
Abstract: Optical media formed from a water soluble polymer and liquid crystal forming amphiphile are disclosed and claimed. The polymer and amphiphile are cast into a film which exhibits an optical axis of symmetry perpendicular to the film surface.

  • Patent number: 5246748
Abstract: This invention provides novel self-assembled multilayer organic thin films including an azo-benzene chromophore which initially appear substantially amorphous when viewed perpendicular to the film surface, but are subsequently treated with a laser in selected areas so that such portions exhibit photo-induced birefringence.

  • Patent number: 5102739
Abstract: Provided is a method for preparing an optical information medium which comprises a polycarbonate substrate. A polycarbonate substrate is subjected to an aqueous ammonia solution treatment at a temperature below ambient temperatures and for an extended period of time. This treatment occurs prior to assembly of the optical information medium. Use of the treated polycarbonate substrate in the optical information medium results in the medium exhibiting a high level of performance over an extended useful life.
