  • Publication number: 20100239840
Abstract: A fiber size composition contains a modified polyolefin, a hydrophilic coupling agent, a boron-containing, fluorine-containing compound, a blend of at least two fatty acids and a compound selected from phosphorus(V) compounds and sulfur(VI) compounds, the fiber size composition being substantially free of conventional lower oxidation state antioxidants and optical brighteners. Composite materials produced from reinforcing fiber materials sized with a fiber size composition according to the invention exhibit improved properties such as, for example, increased strength and/or improved color stability.

  • Patent number: 7585563
Abstract: A fiber-size composition contains a modified polyolefin, a hydrophilic coupling agent, and an enhancer with at least one of the following: a fluorine-containing compound, a hydrophobic coupling agent, a cyclic fatty acid, or at least two saturated fatty acids with at least one of said fatty acids having at least two acid groups. When reinforcing fiber materials sized with the composition are used to form composite articles, the articles show improved properties such as strength and color.

  • Patent number: 6846855
Abstract: A sizing composition and method for manufacturing such, which is suitable for use in manufacturing fiber-reinforced composites which have desirable properties such as high strength, high resistance to water and chemical degradation, and improved coloring. This is achieved in part by good adhesion of the sizing composition to the reinforcing fibers and the polymer matrix. The sizing composition includes an emulsion having a grafted polyolefin, two or more saturated fatty acids, and one or more silane coupling agents. When reinforcing fiber materials sized according to the invention are used in a molding process, the resulting composites are observed to show minimal discoloration.

  • Publication number: 20010016259
Abstract: The present invention relates to a sizing composition for glass fibers used to reinforce thermoplastic resins, such as polyolefins, and particularly, polypropylene. The composites produced with the fiber strands coated with such sizing compositions have improved fiber adhesion and retention of fiber length. In addition, a method for improving tensile creep and tensile fatigue in polypropylene composites reinforced with glass fibers is provided.
