  • Patent number: 4662548
Abstract: A pannier for a cycle adapted to be secured to a carrier rack mounted over a wheel. A flexible, generally rectangular bag is of sufficient size that its rear portion extends downwardly from the carrier closely adjacent to the spokes of the wheel. A rigid panel fixed to the rear of the bag and extending substantially to the bottom of the bag is utilized to provide structural definition for the bag and to prevent it from interfering with the spokes. A U-shaped bar having opposed ends pivotally connected to the rear panel is employed for holding the bag in an open or collapsed condition. In one embodiment a second panel extends substantially across the bottom of the bag and is pivotally connected to the lower edge of the first panel to provide lateral stability for the bag. The opposed ends of the bar may be utilized as pivot pins for both the panels and the bar.

  • Patent number: 4580706
Abstract: In one embodiment the saddlebag includes a cutaway in the forward lower corner portion thereof to provide a heel clearance for a passenger on the cycle. A substantially solid panel is affixed to the interior rear of the bag and an elongated attachment plate is provided on the exterior rear of the saddlebag. A U-shaped bar pivotally mounted to the interior panel is advantageously employed as part of the internal frame construction for the bag. The bags are mounted on the cycle by way of a first pair of straps secured to spaced locations on the seat and a second pair of straps removably connected thereto. The ends of the straps of the second pair are detachably secured to the attachment plate on the saddlebags. A rigid strap mounted to a fixed part of the cycle is adapted to receive a connector extending from the lower front side of the saddlebag. A rear strap connecting the rear portions of a pair of saddlebags is also provided. Each saddlebag may include detachable exhaust/abrasion shields.

  • Patent number: 4562944
Abstract: A pannier mounting arrangement is disclosed for mounting panniers on the rear carrier rack of cycle vehicles such as bicycles or motorcycles including an elongated rod permanently attached to each pannier encased within a pouch extending across the upper edge of the pannier, the rod adapted to be slidably received within a channel section, either formed in a track section attached to existing bicycle carrier racks or formed integrally in a horizontal platform of specially designed carrier racks incorporating the mounting arrangement components. Also disclosed is a specially designed rear carrier rack which includes a horizontal platform having the channel sections integrally formed therein supported by a plurality of struts arranged to provide a rigid support. The rear carrier rack also features an arrangement for providing an adjustment in the length of the horizontal platform, so as to be readily installed on cycle vehicles of various frame sizes and configurations.

  • Patent number: 4418850
Abstract: A pannier adapted to be mounted on the rear carrier rack of cycle vehicles includes a rectangular bag mounted on a flat, rigid frame and a U-shaped bar pivotally mounted on the frame and within the bag to permit collapsing of the bag. The pannier is mounted on the rack by an elongated rod extending across the upper edge of the frame and adapted to be slidably received within a channel section of the rack. A pair of snaps carried by a pannier flap secure and position the pannier, fore and aft, against shifting movement with respect to the channel section. The lower end of the pannier is secured by means of a webbing loop mating with a wire form which is bolted to a portion of the carrier rack support and which has a rear-projecting section. The rear-projecting section slides into the webbing loop simultaneously with movement of the rod element into the channel section.

  • Patent number: 4359233
Abstract: A motorcycle tank bag mounting arrangement is disclosed consisting of front and rear harnesses adpted to be secured about the motorcycle frame members to the front and rear of the motorcycle tank. Quick disconnect fastener elements are carried by each harness adapted to mate with corresponding quick disconnect fastener elements secured to straps fastened to the bottom of the motorcycle tank bag providing a three-point retention. A motorcycle tank pad is positioned underneath the bottom of the tank bag by the tank bag straps passing through slits formed in the pad. Projecting tab portions of the tank pad underlie each of the bag and harness fastener elements to cushion the same on the tank surface.

  • Patent number: 4353490
Abstract: A pannier mounting system is disclosed for mounting pannier bags alongside the rear wheel of a bicycle. The system includes a strut supported platform mounted to the bicycle frame, which platform includes longitudinally extending channel slots adapted to slidably receive corresponding elongated track elements mounted to the pannier assembly. The pannier assembly includes a fabric bag and liner panel which is disposed in the interior of each bag secured to the wheel side of the bag. The pannier assembly is adjustable longitudinally by sliding movement of the track in the channel and is maintained in proper position for heel clearance by means of a locating element mounted to the lower end of the stiffener panel. The locating element positively engages the lower portions of the strut members in longitudinally adjustable positions and acts through the liner panel to securely position the pannier in any adjusted position. A quick release retainer secures the locating element in engagement with the strut members.
