  • Publication number: 20080109343
Abstract: Methods, apparatus, systems, and programs for computers are provided for automatic allocation of resource occupiers (e.g. data, people) to available resources (e.g. bandwidth, radio frequency spectrum, theatre seats). Allocation of resources to resource occupiers is based on a measure of urgency of allocation derived from the size of the resource occupier, the resource available, and the time remaining in which to allocate resource to the resource occupier. One, two, or more time thresholds may be associated with each resource occupier: in particular a timeliness threshold up to which allocation urgency increases but after which it decreases, and a perishability threshold after which allocation of resource to the resource occupier ceases to be at all useful, and after which no more resource is allocated. Also automated auction methods, systems, and programs for real-time allocation of radio frequency spectrum.

  • Patent number: 6735692
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and system for directing a network boot. The method includes obtaining a bootstrap by a client, the client residing in a subnet; obtaining a configuration file by the bootstrap, where the configuration file comprises a map of subnets and their corresponding file servers; determining from the configuration file a file server corresponding to the client's subnet; and obtaining an operating system (OS) image from the corresponding local file server. The method and system provides a bootstrap which, when loaded onto a client, obtains a configuration file from the remote file server. The configuration file contains a map of the network's subnets and their corresponding local file servers. Using this configuration file, the bootstrap obtains an OS image from the local file server which services the subnet in which the client resides.

  • Publication number: 20030161084
Abstract: A protection system for an electrical power network uses a method of determining the times of capture of current signals obtained by protection devices (3A, 3B) at first and second spaced points along a power line. Measurements are captured at the first device (3A) and sent to the second device (3B), which captures a second measurement and sends a reply to the first device. The timing of both measurements is synchronised using a GPS signal, and the total propagation time tp1+tp2) of the outward and return signals (S1, S2) is stored in a memory. In the event that the GPS signal is lost, the stored propagation time is used to calculate the actual time of the second measurement relative to the first measurement.

  • Patent number: 6473655
Abstract: A data processing system and method are described for creating a virtual partition within an existing partition within a hard disk drive included within the system. A first master boot record is written which includes a partition. The partition defines a first file system to be utilized by the hard drive. A file is created within the partition. The first master boot record is temporarily overwritten with a second master boot record without altering the first file system. The second master boot record includes a designation of the file as a second partition. The second partition defines a second file system. The second partition is designated as the active partition. The data processing system is booted utilizing the second master boot record. The second partition is a virtual partition within the existing partition.
