    Abstract: A method of friction welding thermoplastic materials, such as a reinforcing plate to the inner surfaces of oppositely disposed legs of a generally U-shaped workpiece, wherein a flexible force applying means applies a force in a direction normal to the direction of relative motion between the parts but in the plane of the mating surfaces for urging the legs of the U-channel into intimate contact with the edges of the reinforcing plate. During a weld time interval the parts undergo relative linear reciprocating motion while being urged in intimate contact by the flexible force applying means which causes the mating surfaces to soften under the influence of friction. After the weld interval, the parts are returned to their original position and are held in forced contact for a time sufficient for the mating surfaces to solidify. Upon solidification the force ceases and the welded parts are removed from the apparatus.

    Abstract: A fluid discharge device such as for use in draining an appliance, such as a dishwasher, into the sink. The discharge device is arranged to prevent splashing of the discharge fluid on the bottom of the sink and includes a divider wall within the discharge duct for dividing the fluid flow into a plurality of streams. The wall may be perforate to further cause a turbulent reduction in the longitudinal velocity of the discharging fluid stream. The duct may be provided with projections extending transversely into the fluid flow to further provide turbulent reduction in the longitudinal velocity of the fluid stream. The discharge device is adapted to be provided in a turned discharge conduit, such as an elbow, and is arranged to provide the desired splash-prevention functioning while yet effectively minimizing obstruction to the fluid flow so as to prevent blockage thereof as by food particles and the like carried by the discharging fluid.

    Abstract: An apparatus for distributing wash liquid to a spray device which is located above a dish-supporting rack in a dishwashing appliance, the apparatus including a vertical hollow tower having an open lower end fixedly attached to the rack, means for rotatably mounting the spray device onto an apertured upper end of the tower so that there is fluid communication between the tower and the spray device, and a fluid-expansible coupling member located below the rack and having an upper opening below and substantially concentric with the open lower end of the tower. A hub assembly supports the coupling member on a pump means which forces wash liquid through the hub assembly and into the coupling member to expand it into a sealing contact with the tower at the open lower end of the tower so that fluid flows through the tower to the spray device.

    Abstract: A hydraulic safety circuit which keeps a hydraulic motor supplied with fluid during the interval when the motor coasts to a stop following shut off of its source of driving fluid. The circuit includes a conduit extending between the motor outlet and the motor inlet, with a check valve arrangement which shuts off normal fluid flow from the motor outlet to the fluid reservoir when the driving pump is shut off, and which instead diverts the fluid through the above noted conduit back to the motor inlet. This permits fluid to circulate through the motor as the motor coasts to a stop, preventing dry coasting and consequent possible burnout. The invention is particularly applicable to a wood chipper, where a heavy rotor (containing wood chipping blades) is connected to the motor and causes the motor to coast for an appreciable interval after the pump is shut off.
