Abstract: Systems and methods for software-reconfigurable chemical process systems useful in a wide range of applications. Embodiments may include software control of internal processes, automated provisions for cleaning internal elements with solvents, provisions for clearing and drying gasses, and multitasking operation. In one family of embodiments, a flexible software-reconfigurable multipurpose reusable “Lab-on-a-Chip” or “embedded chemical processor” is realized that can facilitate a wide range of applications, instruments, and appliances. Through use of a general architecture, a single design can be economically manufactured in large scale and readily adapted to diverse specialized applications. Clearing and cleaning provisions may be used to facilitate reuse of the device, or may be used for decontamination prior to recycling or non-reclaimed disposal.

Abstract: The Fourier transforming properties of simple lenses and related optical elements is well known and heavily used in a branch of engineering known as “Fourier Optics.” Classical Fourier Optics allows for relatively easy, inexpensive, flexible signal processing of images by using lenses or other means to take two-dimensional Fourier transforms of an optical wavefront and using a translucent plate or similar means in this location to introduce an optical transfer function operation on the optical wavefront. The image processing possibilities have historically been limited to transfer functions that mathematically are “positive-definite,” i.e. those which affect only amplitude and do not introduce varying phase relationships.

Abstract: A communication system includes a network office and at least one twisted pair loop plant wiring path between the network office and a first premises network. The network office is transmits first data over the twisted pair loop plant wiring using Ethernet protocol to the first premises network, and receives second data over the twisted pair loop plant wiring using Ethernet protocol from the first premises network.

Abstract: Image processing utilizing numerical calculation of fractional exponential powers of a diagonalizable numerical transform operator for use in an iterative or other larger computational environments. In one implementation, one or more selected precomputed fractional powers of the transform operator are stored in memory. Computation is simplified by associating precomputed powers of the numerical transform operator with the binary values of individual digits in a binary fraction representation of the fractional exponent. The numerical transform operator may be a discrete Fourier transform operator, discrete fractional Fourier transform operator: and the like. This numerical calculation is useful in correcting the focus of misfocused images, which may originate from optical processes involving light (for example, with a tens or lens system) or particle beams (for example, in electron microscopy or ion lithography).

Abstract: Touchpad user interfaces for controlling external systems such as computers, machinery, and process environments via at least three independent control signals. The touchpad may be operated by hand, other parts of the body, or inanimate objects. Such an interface affords a wide range of uses in computer applications, machine and process control, and assistance to the disabled. In one embodiment simple contact position-sensing touchpads, producing control signals responsive to a contact region, are enhanced to provide several independent control signals. Enhancements may include velocity sensors, pressure sensors, and electronic configurations measuring contact region widths. Touch-screens positioned over visual displays may be adapted. According to other aspects pressure-sensor array touchpads are combined with image processing to responsively calculate parameters from contact regions. Six independent control parameters can be derived from each region of contact. These may be easily manipulated by a user.

The audio-video storage device is configured to store at least one media file, which includes at least video. The first client device is configured to enable the two client device to simultaneously access the at least one media file stored on the audio-video storage device. The system is configured to cause playback of media that is associated with the retrieved media file, and to enable the user of the first client device to operate on the playback of the media associated with the retrieved media file, using at least the operations of start, stop, pause, fast forward, and reverse.

Abstract: A method of communication between two users using a system is claimed. Two communication devices are registered with at least one communication network and are capable of at least one communication type. A first user is allowed to connect to at least one communication network by using the first communication device. The first communication device is configured for wireless communication. From the first communication device, information indicating the location of the first user is sent to the system to enable the system to maintain a service record including the first user's location information. The first user is allowed to request communication by selecting an identifier for the second user from a list of displayed user identifiers. Location information from a service record is retrieved for the second communication device in response to the request. Communication of a selected type is initiated using the communication network and the retrieved address information.

Abstract: A method of communication between a plurality of users is claimed. Two communication devices are registered with at least one communication network. At least one of the two communication devices is configured for wireless communication. Two users are allowed to use one of the two communication devices to connect to at least one communication network. A service record is maintained for each registered communication device. The service record includes the respective communication device's addressing information. A query is issued for a service instance associated with one of the two users in response to a request by the other user to establish communication. Addressing information of the second communication device is retrieved and a communication over at least one communication network established using the retrieved addressing information if a service instance is found.

The code is operable to cause the first device to communicate first user location-related information to a network to allow a server to maintain a service record. The code is operable to allow the user to select a real-time communication type. The code is operable to cause display of a user identifier for a second user in a directory on the first device. The code is operable to respond to the first user's selection of the displayed identifier to cause initiation of communication, in which location information of a second device at which the second user has logged in is retrieved.
