  • Patent number: 5891121
Abstract: Absorbent articles such as sanitary napkins, panty liners, and incontinence pads are disclosed that have undergarment covering components (or "side wrapping elements") that extend from the main body portion of the absorbent article and automatically fold along the sides of a wearer's panties and provide an alternative to conventional side flaps. The side wrapping elements have at least one zone of extensibility and a region therein that is stiffer and less extensible than the zone of extensibility. The absorbent article preferably comprises at least three regions with different bending moduli to control the location of the absorbent article about which the side wrapping elements will bend.

  • Patent number: 5858011
Abstract: An absorbent article comprises a liquid permeable topsheet; a liquid impermeable backsheet joined to the topsheet; an absorbent core positioned between the topsheet and the backsheet; and a soft resilient member attached to the absorbent core or outside of the core which will preferentially deform, bend or lift in a predictable manner when lateral pressure is applied to the pad, wherein the resilient member consists of at least two distinct pieces of foam.

  • Patent number: 5830296
Abstract: A method and apparatus of embossing a pattern into absorbent articles such as sanitary napkins, panty liners, and adult incontinence pads which simultaneously forms a perimeter seal on the absorbent article is disclosed. The method and apparatus utilize a heated sealing member and an anvil surface. The heated sealing member has a recessed region with a lower temperature and lower pressure embossing member therein.

  • Patent number: 5795349
Abstract: The present invention relates to absorbent articles such as sanitary napkins, panty liners, and incontinence pads. More particularly, the present invention relates to absorbent articles, such as sanitary napkins, that have longitudinal side edge components that naturally wrap the sides of a wearer's panties which provide an alternative to conventional side flaps.

  • Patent number: 5688258
Abstract: A disposable cover which, when used with an absorbent material, such as a pad of woven cloth, provides an absorbent article, such as a catamenial pad is disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, the disposable cover comprises a liquid pervious rewet barrier and an anti-stain barrier joined thereto. Preferably, the rewet barrier comprises a material having capillaries which allow bodily liquids to rapidly penetrate therethrough and the anti-stain barrier is provided in two portions, one of which is joined to each longitudinal edge of the fewer barrier. The disposable cover can also be provided with absorbent attachment means for securing the cover to the absorbent material and with garment attachment means for securing the assembly of the disposable cover and the absorbent material to a user's undergarment. Alternative embodiments of the invention can assume a pouch configuration.

  • Patent number: 5674214
Abstract: A disposable absorbent article, such as a sanitary napkin, is disclosed that has components which may separate in the Z-direction with relation to other components of the article when the absorbent article is worn. The sanitary napkin of the present invention comprises a liquid pervious topsheet, a liquid impervious backsheet, an absorbent core positioned between the topsheet and the backsheet, and a liquid pervious spacing structure for moving the topsheet away from the core. The spacing structure is generally positioned between the topsheet and the core. The spacing structure has a longitudinal centerline, and opposed lateral sides which may move inwardly toward the longitudinal centerline when the spacing is compressed from the sides. This results in at least a portion of the spacing structure moving the topsheet apart from the absorbent core. In an alternative embodiment, the sanitary napkin of the present invention also has an absorbent core which separates from the backsheet of the sanitary napkin.
