Patent number: 8427433Abstract: A system and method for providing tactile feedback on a touch screen display unit is provided. The tactile feedback unit has a gel layer for deforming discrete surface areas of a touch-screen display; and a tactile feedback controller for controlling the deformation by the gel layer. The tactile feedback unit is overlaid onto a liquid crystal display, OLED display, or other types of touch screen displays. Areas of the gel layer are individually controllable by the tactile feedback controller, such that areas of the gel layer that overlay control elements of a graphical user interface displayed on the touch screen display are activated. Additionally, contact with the touch screen display by a user at an area defined as a control element causes the corresponding area of the gel layer to provide a tactile feedback, such as deformation, vibration, etc.Type: GrantFiled: October 17, 2008Date of Patent: April 23, 2013Assignee: Honeywell International Inc.Inventors: Lewin Edwards, Patricia McCrimmon, Richard Thomas Watson

Patent number: 8035516Abstract: A system and method for false alarm prevention in unstable locations is presented. In one embodiment, the method comprises activating an asset sensor and a reference sensor, detecting motion in the asset sensor, determining if the reference sensor detects motion, and preventing transmission of an alarm if the reference sensor detects the motion. In another embodiment, the method comprises activating an asset sensor and a reference sensor, detecting motion in the asset sensor and transmitting acceleration data in accordance with the detected motion, sensing local acceleration data from the reference sensor, and signaling an alarm if a difference between the transmitted acceleration data and the local acceleration data is greater than a predetermined threshold. The reference sensor can be mounted in a control panel, and the asset and reference sensors can be enrolled in the control panel.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 2008Date of Patent: October 11, 2011Assignee: Honeywell International Inc.Inventors: Lewin Edwards, Christopher Beach

Patent number: 7961091Abstract: A method for synchronizing a security system control panel and a sensor. The control panel and the sensor each have a transceiver. The control panel monitors a publicly broadcast signal for an time signal, periodically receives the time signal, calculates a frequency hopping index pointer using the time signal and accesses a frequency hopping table using the frequency hopping index pointer. The frequency hopping table is used by the control panel to determine when to hop between multiple receiving channels and which of the receiving channels to hop. The sensor wakes up from a standby mode when the sensor determines that the sensor is to send data, receives the publicly broadcast signal that includes a time signal, selects the channel that the control panel is actively receiving data using the time signal and transmits the data to the control panel using the selected channel.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 2007Date of Patent: June 14, 2011Assignee: Honeywell International Inc.Inventors: Lewin A. Edwards, Stanley W. Albrechtsen, Theodore A. White

Patent number: 7875853Abstract: A passive infrared sensor (PIR) for detecting infrared radiation which includes a lens positioned in a sensor housing, and a pyroelectric element electrically connected to a circuit board within a filter housing positioned in the sensor housing. A microprocessor is electrically connected to a main circuit board and controls a liquid crystal display (LCD) attached to the sensor housing. The lens overlaps the LCD. The LCD has LCD regions corresponding to lens regions of the lens. Using the microprocessor, the LCD regions selectively prevent radiation energy from passing to the pyroelectric element, and the LCD regions selectively allow radiation energy to pass to the pyroelectric element. A signaling device communicates an alarm signal indicating when radiation energy within a specified wavelength band reaches the pyroelectric element.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 2007Date of Patent: January 25, 2011Assignee: Honeywell International Inc.Inventor: Lewin A. Patent number: 7796035Abstract: A method and apparatus for generating an alarm signal upon detecting movement of an object over a time that is greater than a field settable allowed movement time. The method includes the steps of locating a housing with respect to the object, setting the allowed movement time for the object, monitoring the movement of the housing, detecting a movement that exceeds the allowed movement time of the housing, generating an alarm signal, and transmitting by wireless transmission the alarm signal to a remote receiving station. Setting the movement time for the object is achieved by the following steps: powering the apparatus while depressing a tamper switch, initiating a time counter, moving the object an acceptable distance, releasing the tamper switch, stopping the time counter, and reading the allowed movement time from the time counter.Type: GrantFiled: November 22, 2006Date of Patent: September 14, 2010Assignee: Honeywell International Inc.Inventors: William E Hallbert, Ralph Scena, Lewin Edwards
