  • Patent number: 4920947
Abstract: A chain saw for cutting aggregate materials including a saw chain of interconnected center links and side link paris composed of heat-treated steel. Certain pairs of the side links support diamond impregnated matrix cutting blocks that are laser welded to the side links in a process where the laser beam is focused and orbited along the juncture to avoid stress risers in the steel material of the supporting side links. Drawing down of the zone adjacent the weld also is controlled to avoid stress risers. The guide bar is provided with a pattern of enclosed channels for directing water to the guide bar groove at spaced positions on the periphery of the guide bar edge for flushing away the aggregate dust generated by the cutting process. The channels are angularly directed toward the guide bar nose and have incrementally increased cross sections on progressing toward the guide bar nose to enhance the flushing operation.

  • Patent number: 4827821
Abstract: A lightweight disposable cutting chain for use with small, compact power supplies comprises in one embodiment a series of links formed of wire. On certain links an end of the wire loop forming the link is cut to form a sharp edge capable of shaving material, such as wood, being cut. The links are arranged so that a narrow kerf is first cut by the links, other links being formed with cutting edges to shave material and widen the kerf. In other embodiments some or all of the links comprise metal plates formed by stamping from sheet metal.

  • Patent number: 4581968
Abstract: A gulletless saw chain having a cutting link with a cutter portion that is configured to be top sharpenable. A depth gauge portion is positioned in close proximity to the cutting edge corner of the cutter portion. The depth gauge is laterally offset to position the outer most edge of the depth gauge at the corner of the cutting edge to thereby control side penetration as well as depth penetration of the cutting edge. A drive link preceding the cutting link includes a guide portion with an inclined leading edge that corresponds with the leading edge of the depth gauge. A shallow V shaped opening is formed between the depth gauge and drive link guide portion to assist the cutting link in tracking in the kerf.

  • Patent number: 4535667
Abstract: The specification discloses a completely outside sharpenable saw chain of the chisel type in which top plate portions are sharpened on their tops and in which side cutter portions are sharpened on their outer sides. The chain has allochiral cutter teeth each having a top plate portion sloping rearwardly and downwardly and joined along one side edge to a side slitter plate portion sloping rearwardly and inwardly, a bent over shank portion, a body portion and a depth gauge portion, wherein the top plate portion, the side plate portion and the shank portion taken together are generally C-shaped in cross-section. The top plate portion has, at its top, a sharpenable end surface forming a top cutting edge ending in a corner chisel point from which a side cutting edge extends downwardly and rearwardly. The side cutting edge is formed where the sharpenable forward end surface of the side plate portion, oriented toward the outer side of the saw chain, intersects the inner face of said side plate portion.

  • Patent number: 4515055
Abstract: A circular saw blade having a plurality of circumferentially-spaced cutter teeth projecting radially outwardly therefrom. A portion of the periphery of the blade rises gradually as it progresses toward the front face of a tooth to provide a depth gauge to control depth of cut. A chip clearing channel extends radially inwardly along the body of the blade adjacent the front face of the tooth. A pocket formed in the body has edge margins which receive and support front and rear surfaces of a cutter tip.

  • Patent number: 4501184
Abstract: A cutting tool for use in applications wherein a kerf is formed during the cutting operation. The cutting tooth is formed on the cutting tool including a rearwardly angled inner relief surface against which the material being cut is impacted. A secondary surface intersects the inner relief surface and extends forwardly of the point of intersection at an angle relative to the direction of cut that is oppositely directed but generally equal to the inner relief surface. The force of the material being cut that is deflected onto the secondary surface is outwardly directed and counterbalances the inwardly directed force imparted onto the inner relief surface.

  • Patent number: 4497232
Abstract: A cutting tool having cutting teeth. The cutting teeth are formed on one end of inserts that are seated in slots provided in the body of the tool with the cutting teeth projected outwardly of the slots. The inserts are produced from a resilient material that is preset in a bowed configuration with the slots having substantially straight side walls. A relief opening is provided in the bottoms of the slots and the seated inserts are forced into an open, substantially straight position with a tail section that curls into the relief opening. Flanges provided on the inserts overlap the edges of one side wall of the slots to resist lateral displacement.

  • Patent number: 4316327
Abstract: The specification discloses a chain saw having a saw bar which is fastened to the frame of the chain saw so that most of the saw bar is outward of the chain saw frame (referred to as the forward portion), which portion is exposed for effective cutting, but with a lever portion rearward of the frame and the drive sprocket of the chain saw for improved mounting and adjustment. The saw bar forms a part of a cassette which also includes a drive sprocket trapped in the saw bar and a saw chain extending around the sprocket and the forward portion of the saw bar. A cover has clamping bosses clamping the saw bar to the frame, and an adjustment screw engaging the rearward end of the saw bar is mounted on the frame at the rear thereof so that it is readily accessible.

  • Patent number: 4272889
Abstract: The specification discloses a motor housing, with a handle of the circular saw type, and a cantilever saw bar carrying a saw chain is secured to the housing in a position extending downwardly from a guide foot of the housing. A retractable guard bar normally is held in a position holding a guard loop around the nose end of the saw bar, the guard bar being positioned at the rear of the saw bar. The guard bar is mounted slidably on the motor housing, and, when a latch is manually released, the guard loop may be pushed up along the saw during a boring (nose cutting) operation. In an alternate embodiment, a foot attachable to a foot of a circular saw motor carries a saw bar and a guard bar with a guard loop surrounding the nose end of the saw bar.

  • Patent number: 4194544
Abstract: An elongated cone like member having a pointed end and a relatively large blunt end with the intermediate portion flaring outwardly from the pointed end to the blunt end, and serrations formed in the member adjacent the pointed end. The pointed end of the member is plunged into the end of a short length log and the blunt end is struck by a driving maul. The serrations prevent the member from bouncing back out of the wood and the multi-directional flaring of the intermediate portion applies splitting pressure radially in a symmetrical pattern from the point as the member is driven into the wood to thereby split the log where it is weakest.

  • Patent number: 4004683
Abstract: A flexible rubber strip has openings slightly smaller than the shank of a power load spaced along its length. Power loads having shank and head portions are inserted through the openings up to the head portion in which position the power loads are gripped by the rubber to hold the power loads until forceably removed. The strip with power loads is contained in a box with one end of the strip protruding through an opening in the top of the box. An operator of a powder actuated tool grabs the protruded end of the strip and pulls a section of the strip from the box. He inserts the first power load into the cartridge receiving chamber of the powder actuated tool and by peeling the strip over the head portion of the power load separates the power load from the strip. The box containing the strip can be clipped to the operator's belt or contained in the pocket of an apron.

  • Patent number: 3968873
Abstract: A semi-rigid strip including means for attaching power loads and fasteners alternately along the strip. Said power loads are attached with the head of the power load against the strip and the crimped end extending outwardly thereof and said fasteners are attached with the point of the fastener against the strip and the head of the fastener extending outwardly of the strip. Said means for attaching the power loads and fasteners to the strip being releasible in a manner whereby they can be inserted into the power load receiving chamber or barrel muzzle as the case may be and then the strip is peeled away, thus avoiding the independent handling of the separated power load or fastener. A box is adapted to contain a number of the semi-rigid strips with fasteners and power loads attached thereto with the strips positioned side-by-side within the box as to be individually removed.
