  • Patent number: 4298547
Abstract: An improved process for production of phenylalkylsulfonate compounds whereby the proportion of the 2-alkylphenylsulfonate isomer is reduced relative to the higher numbered isomers thereof (3-alkyl; 4-alkyl; etc.). After alkylation of aromatic compounds to produce a mixture of alkylbenzenes, the 2-alkylbenzene isomer is selectively cracked to lower boiling products, leaving the higher numbered isomers substantially unreacted. Subsequent sulfonation results in alkylphenylsulfonate derivatives having improved detergency properties.

  • Patent number: 4230894
Abstract: Benzene or alkylbenzene (e.g. toluene) is alkylated with propylene to produce diisopropylbenzenes or isopropylalkylbenzenes, which in turn are selectively cracked to remove the 1,4-isomer. The resultant product, containing a high level of the 1,3-isomer, is then oxidized to 1,3-dihydroxybenzene or 3-alkylphenol (e.g. 3-methylphenyl) in significant yield.

Date of Patent: October 28, 1980

  • Patent number: 4197413
Abstract: A four-step method for the selective production of the 1,3-isomer of methylphenol comprising the alkylation of toluene with propylene in the presence of a specified type of zeolite alkylation catalyst followed by the selective reaction, via a specified type of shape selective zeolite, of the 1,4-isomer of the alkylation product to leave the 1,3-isomer thereof in excess of equilibrium. Subsequent oxidation and acid catalyzed rearrangement results in desirably high yield of 3-methylphenol.

  • Patent number: 4181811
Abstract: Isomeric mixtures of non-polar disubstituted aromatic compounds are brought into contact with a shape selective crystalline zeolite catalyst, under cracking or transalkylation conditions, to undergo selective reaction of the 1,4-isomer, thereby leaving the 1,2-isomer and/or 1,3-isomer in excess of equilibrium. The shape selective zeolite catalyst employed herein comprises a crystalline zeolite having a silica to alumina ratio of at least 12 and a constraint index, as herein defined, within the approximate range of 1 to 12.
