  • Patent number: 5463182
Abstract: A process for esterifying a polymer containing carboxyl(ate) groups, by maintaining the polymer at 0.degree. C. to 200.degree. C. where the counterion for the carboxylate groups is a selected ammonium or sulfoxonium ions. Such processes are useful for preparing improved films and coatings, particularly automotive coatings.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 21, 1993
Date of Patent: October 31, 1995
Assignee: E. I. Du Pont de Nemours and Company
Inventors: Lewis E. Manring, Michael W. J. West
  • Patent number: 5407626
Abstract: Quaternary ammonium polyarylamides are provided that are useful in articles of manufacture that require minimal ionic impurities. The polyarylamides are produced by reacting certain polyamides together with quaternary ammonium bases of the formula R.sup.4.sub.4 N.sup.+ X.sup.-, wherein each R.sup.4 is independently selected from hydrocarbyl or substituted hydrocarbyl, provided that at least one of the R.sup.4 groups contains at least one beta hydrogen atom. There is also provided the process for producing the polyarylamides, the process for making articles of manufacture from the polyarylamides, and a process for modifying the surfaces of such polyamides.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 11, 1993
Date of Patent: April 18, 1995
Assignee: E. I. Du Pont de Nemours and Company
Inventors: Robert R. Burch, Lewis E. Manring
  • Patent number: 5389447
Abstract: Polymers of 2,2-disubstituted-3-hydroxypropionic acid, e.g., polymers of .beta.-propiolactone, are employed in ceramic compositions as binders or dispersing agents.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 20, 1989
Date of Patent: February 14, 1995
Assignee: E. I. Du Pont de Nemours and Company
Inventors: Roe C. Blume, Lewis E. Manring, William G. Peet

  • Patent number: 5155237
Abstract: 2,2-Dihydrocarbyl-3-propiolactones are prepared by the thermolysis at 175.degree. C. to 350.degree. C. of low molecular weight (oligomeric) poly(3-hydroxy-2,2-dihydrocarbylpropionic acid) that contains carboxyl ends groups, in the presence of alkali metal, ammonium or phosphonium cations. The propiolactones may be polymerized to high molecular weight polymers.
