  • Patent number: 4022830
Abstract: A novel process for preparing polychlorobenzamide derivatives, useful as biocidal agents, flame retardants in plastic resins, and the like, from corresponding polychlorobenzonitrile compound in near quantitative yields is disclosed. A polychlorobenzonitrile compound is admixed and reacted with excess sulfuric acid at an elevated temperature e.g. 100.degree. to 160.degree. C for a time period sufficient to hydrolyze the polychlorobenzonitrile derivative to the corresponding polychlorobenzamide derivative. The reaction product is then recovered to provide the corresponding polychlorobenzamide derivative in an excellent yield above about 90%.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 3996261
Abstract: Novel polyhalo, N-substituted aniline compounds are prepared which have the following structural formula: ##STR1## where R is selected from the group consisting of cyano, nitro, and alkyl sulfone, X is halo and Z represents a radical as follows: ##STR2## where R' and R" are hydrogen or lower alkyl, X is a number ranging from 1 to 5, and Y is 0-3. These compounds are prepared by reacting a polyhalo aromatic compound having the formula ##STR3## where X and R have a significance as just discussed with an appropriate polyamino reactant or aminohydroxy compound which additionally may contain either linkages. These new compounds have biological activity and are also useful as chemical intermediates.

  • Patent number: 3984487
Abstract: A novel method for preparing pentachloronitrobenzene directly from the corresponding pentachlorobenzonitrile compound is disclosed. Pentachlorobenzonitrile is heated in the presence of an excess of sulfuric acid and a nitrating agent, e.g., nitric acid at elevated temperatures of from about 100.degree.C to about 160.degree.C for a time sufficient to convert the pentachlorobenzonitrile to a pentachloronitrobenzene. In one embodiment the pentachlorobenzonitrile compound is first heated in the presence of an excess of concentrated sulfuric acid at temperatures in excess of 180.degree.C to activate the pentachlorobenzonitrile and the activated material is then heated at lower temperatures of about 100.degree. to 120.degree.C in the presence of a nitrating agent to convert the activated pentachlorobenzonitrile to the corresponding pentachloronitrobenzene.
