  • Patent number: 8578234
Abstract: A data link layer tunneling technique improves the throughput of high speed data in noisy wireless environments. Recovering lost frames transmitted between a packet sending unit and a packet receiving unit in a data communications system generally comprises (a) identifying a failure to successfully receive a missed frame at the packet receiving unit; (b) establishing a logical tunnel channel at the packet receiving unit to acknowledge the next successfully received frame; (c) starting a first timer at the packet receiving unit; (c) upon receiving a tunnel establishment request from the packet receiving unit, the packet sending unit resending the missed frame on the logical tunnel channel and starting a second timer; and (d) the packet sending unit resending the missed frame a specified number of times until receiving an acknowledgement from the packet receiving unit.

  • Patent number: 8472941
Abstract: Polling methods for use in a communication system, such as a fixed wireless communication system, are described. The fixed wireless communication system includes at least one wireless base unit and a plurality of fixed-location wireless transceiver units, where each transceiver unit is, for example, located at a home residence and coupled to a personal computer (PC). In one particular polling method, a wireless transceiver unit detects a failure of a primary energy source, switches to a battery backup for power, and sends a message to the wireless base unit indicating such failure. The message initiates the wireless base unit to poll the wireless transceiver unit on a periodic basis for status information. During the failure, a data traffic channel established between the units is torn down to conserve power at the wireless transceiver unit. Once the primary energy source is restored, the data traffic channel is brought back up and the periodic polling is terminated.

  • Patent number: 7983688
Abstract: A method of operating a communication system is disclosed. The method includes transmitting from a remote unit to a base station remote unit channel data. The remote unit channel is generated at the remote unit and includes data about a first portion of communication channels on which the call can be executed. The method also includes applying a channel selection method to the remote unit channel data and to base station channel data so as to select a communication channel from among the first portion of communication channels. The base station channel data is generated at the base station and includes data about a second portion of the communication channels. The method further includes executing a call on the selected communication channel.

  • Patent number: 7889704
Abstract: The present invention provides methods for improving the performance and efficiency of time sharing wireless networks by reducing collisions, eliminating wasted bandwidth caused by unnecessary gaps between transmissions, and reducing the amount of control information broadcast from the base station. The present invention accomplishes this by synchronizing the actions of the remote units in the wireless network to the control messages sent by the base unit and having the base unit compensate for the inherent system latency in determining when control messages should be sent. The present invention also consolidates the functionality of some of the control messages in order to reduce bandwidth usage.

  • Patent number: 7881328
Abstract: A method and an apparatus provide for controlled access to a shared communication medium. Time slots on a forward channel include information regarding status useful for remote units to determine whether a reverse channel is available for seizure. Additionally, information along the forward channel provides guidance to the remote units to control attempts to seize the reverse channel. In one embodiment a remote unit divides a data package into a plurality of portions and attempts to seize the reverse channel using a single portion of the data package which corresponds to one time slot on the reverse channel. It then waits until it receives notification along the forward channel that the first data portion was successfully received before it attempts to send any of the remainder of its data in consecutive time slots on the reverse channel.

  • Patent number: 7324495
Abstract: A method has been provided for using the broadcast channel of a wireless multiple access network to communicate network timing information, or a time-stamp, to remote units. The method defines a broadcast channel protocol which divides communication frames into units called broadcast channel (BC) superframes. Each broadcast channel superframe is given a unique identification number, called a superframe count, which is transmitted by each base station. Then, both the network base stations and remote units can record events using the known superframe count. A method is also disclosed for the network to assign 14-bit identification numbers to remote units being installed into the network, so that communications can be conducted with installed remote units using the identification numbers instead of the 32-bit hardware serial numbers.

  • Patent number: 7161922
Abstract: A wireless communication system having a base unit and a plurality of remote transceiver units utilizes a dynamic time slot assignment scheme for channel access. The base unit receives and processes a channel access request message from a remote transceiver unit and prepares a channel measurement request message in response. If an Mth time slot of a time frame is available, the base unit sends this message in the Mth time slot and receives a message having channel measurement data in the Mth time slot of the next time frame. On the other hand, if the Mth time slot of the time frame is already reserved, the base unit sends the message in an Nth time slot of the time frame and receives a message having the channel measurement data in the Nth time slot of the next time frame. The base unit selects, based on the channel measurement data, an appropriate channel for communication for the remote transceiver unit.
