  • Publication number: 20060247110
Abstract: The present invention provides an improvement (20) in a Davenport® automatic screw machine having a stationary spindle. The improvement broadly includes a quick-change mechanism (26) associated with the stationary spindle (22). The mechanism includes mating frusto-conical first and second surfaces (28, 31) on the spindle and tool holder, and a multi-lead threaded connection (32) between the tool holder and stationary spindle such that the tool holder may be quickly locked into mating engagement with the stationary spindle by relative rotation therebetween through a short angular distance. The invention may also include an adjustment mechanism (33) that allows the axis (x2-x2) of the tool to be aligned with the axis (x1-x1) of a spaced rotatable spindle. This adjustment mechanism includes a base member (34), an adjustment member (35), and a locking mechanism (37) for selectively holding the adjustment member in the desired position relative to the base member.

  • Patent number: 7013774
Abstract: An improved tool holder, such as a shave tool (20), broadly includes: an adapter plate (23) adapted to be mounted on the screw machine (21) for controlled movement toward and away from the workpiece (W); a tool block (24) slidably mounted on the adapter plate for relative movement relative thereto along a first axis (x—x); a slide body (25) mounted on the tool block for rotation relative thereto about a second axis (y—y), an adjustment mechanism (28) acting between the slide body and the tool block for controllably varying the angular position of the slide body relative to the tool block; and a head (26) slidably mounted on the slide body for movement relative thereto along a third axis (z—z). The head has a roller (22) and cutting tool (T) spaced from the roller.

  • Publication number: 20060010982
Abstract: The invention provides an improved method and apparatus for indicating an apparent error in the operation of a fluid-powered attachment (A) mounted on a machine tool for controlled movement toward and away from a workpiece (W) upon which an operation (e.g., thread rolling, knurling, burnishing, etc.) is to be performed during a cycle.

  • Publication number: 20050210991
Abstract: The invention provides an improved method and apparatus for indicating an apparent error in the operation of a fluid-powered thread-forming attachment (A) mounted on a machine tool for controlled movement toward and away from a workpiece (W) upon which a thread is to be formed during a thread-forming cycle. The improved apparatus (60) broadly includes a fluid-powered actuator (64) for selectively moving the thread-forming attachment (A) relative to workpiece (W) during the cycle; a sensor (73) operatively arranged to monitor the pressure within the actuator during at least a portion of the cycle, and arranged to provide an output signal; and a programmable logic unit (75) provided with the sensor output signal, arranged to store minimum and maximum permissible fluid pressure values expected during the cycle, and operatively arranged to indicate an apparent error in the formation of a thread on the workpiece if the pressure determined by the sensor is not between the stored minimum and maximum values.

  • Patent number: 6748779
Abstract: A tangential rolling attachment (20) for a machine tool, broadly includes a body (21); a pair of arms (22L, 22R) having their proximal marginal end portions (23L, 23R) pivotally mounted on the body and having distal marginal end portions (24L, 24R). The arms are biased to move in opposite angular directions such that the distal marginal end portions thereof will be urged to move away from one another. A roll (28L, 28R) is mounted on the distal marginal end portion of each arm for imparting an action to a workpiece when the attachment is moved to tangentially engage the workpiece. A wedge (29) is mounted on the body for movement relative thereto in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the workpiece. An actuator (30) mounted on the body for selectively moving the wedge relative to the body to vary the spacing between the axes of the rolls. The improved rolling head may also incorporate a quick-release mechanism (33L, 33R) for mounting a roll on the arm of the machine tool attachment.

  • Patent number: 5167136
Abstract: Each of the two, pivotal, roll supporting arms of a thread rolling attachment has therethrough adjacent the end thereof remote from its pivotal axis a bore in which one end of a cylindrical pattern roll supporting shaft is adjustably secured. The axis of the bore, and hence the axis of the shaft and the pattern roll mounted thereon, are inclined slightly to the pivotal axis of the roll supporting arm, so that the axis or rotation of the pattern roll will be inclined slightly to the axis of rotation of the stock which is to be engaged by the roll. The pattern roll is releasably attached to one end of the support shaft, and is drivingly connected to one end of an internal pin, which is mounted intermediate its ends for rotation in an axial bore which is formed through the support shaft. At its opposite end the pin is releasably connected to a roll gear to which rotation is imparted by the pin upon rotation of the pattern roll.
