  • Patent number: 9306853
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for maintaining a quality of service (QoS) for a multi-media packet data service in a transport network is provided. The method comprises determining a first packet loss indication for a first flow of QoS traffic packets. The method further comprises determining a second packet loss indication for a second flow of QoS traffic packets, wherein the determination of the first packet loss indication for the first flow of QoS traffic packets is independent from the determination of the second packet loss indication for the second flow of QoS traffic packets. The method further comprises determining whether to drop the first flow of QoS traffic packets based on the first packet loss indication or to drop the second flow of QoS traffic packets based on the second packet loss indication.

  • Patent number: 9130965
Abstract: The present invention provides methods of inter-technology handoff of a multi-mode mobile unit in a packet-switched communication system. One embodiment of the method includes establishing a call from a first application layer client in the first mobile unit using a first wireless communication link that operates according to a first wireless access technology. The method also includes sending, in response to detecting changing conditions of the first wireless communication link, a request to form a conference call including the first application layer client and inviting a second application layer client in the first mobile unit to join the conference call. The second application layer client uses a second wireless communication link that operates according to a second wireless access technology. The method further includes handing off the call from the first application layer client to the second application layer client.

  • Patent number: 8885474
Abstract: The number of Reverse Activity Bits (RABs) equal to “1” per frame is a Congestion Overload (CO) metric used to determine whether the reverse link in a wireless communications system is in a congestion overload state due to a reverse link RF overload. When the value of the CO metric exceeds a first predetermined threshold that is indicative of a congestion overload condition, the system enters a block state where all new connection requests are blocked. Once in the block state, if the value of the CO metric does not decrease but continues to increase and exceeds a second higher threshold, the system enters a mute state. In the mute state a predetermined large percentage of existing active calls are muted. Specifically, a message is sent downlink to specific ATs instructing them to reduce their transmission rates to zero but to still maintain their active connections.

  • Patent number: 8804662
Abstract: For handover between wireless telecommunications networks of different technology types, an air interface is set up between a first node 4 included in a network of a first technology type and a second node 10 included in a network of a second different technology type. Signaling messaging, in accordance with the second technology type, is related to handover of a mobile terminal from the network of the first technology type to the network of the second technology type. The signaling messaging is encapsulated in a container for transmission over the signaling interface. An identifier is associated with the container to indicate that it encapsulates the signaling messaging. When the identifier is detected at the first node, the container is sent over the interface to the second node. In one method in accordance with the invention, the first technology type is WiMAX and the identifier is a special service flow identifier. This may be detected at an Access Services Network Gateway (ASN GW), for example.

  • Patent number: 8000242
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for reducing packet loss for a packet data service during congestion in a transport network are provided. The method comprises measuring a packet loss rate over a time period in one or more flows of data traffic packets associated with the packet data service to determine whether the one or more flows of data traffic packets are experiencing a variation in a desired traffic performance level at a particular time duration during the congestion in the time period. The method further comprises triggering a request to reduce a flow rate of at least one of the one or more flows of data traffic packets based on the packet loss rate if the at least one of the one or more flows of data traffic packets experiences the variation in the desired traffic performance level.

  • Patent number: 7792026
Abstract: A method of receiving data packets. In the method of receiving data packets, a determination is made as to whether a received data packet is received out of an expected order. If the determining step determines a received packet is out of the expected order, a time period is calculated to wait for one or more missing data packets based at least in part on an expected time of receiving the one or more missing data packets.

  • Patent number: 7774014
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and an apparatus of wireless communication with at least one wireless unit. The method includes detecting an indication of error in a plurality of traffic frames to control transmit power between at least a first and second forward link based on the indication of error. The method further includes receiving a plurality of consecutive traffic frames over at least two reverse links from a wireless unit to select a frame in soft handoff. To control transmit power, for example, a controller may perform reverse link error detection after frame selection. The controller detects a frame error to boost the transmit power, substantially correcting a link imbalance situation. In this way, by controlling transmit power in a spread spectrum wireless communication system to reduce call drops, a call drop rate may be significantly decreased while increasing capacity of radio frequency transmission.
