    Abstract: A damper actuator motor device includes a fan brake device which is secured to a motor rotor shaft and is configured to reduce motor rotation speed in a preferential direction. Preferably, the fan brake device has an asymmetric configuration, and is adapted to gather air radially in an enclosed cavity and discharge it axially in one direction. The fan device preferably is adapted to project a size that takes up more than half of the space of the cavity. When the motor is back driven, the fan brake device causes differentially pressure and air resistance in a confined area, producing a drag and braking force that increases with motor speed. The invention can be applied to motor actuators used to control air dampers and other valves in gas or fluid delivery systems. The invention can also be used to reduce water hammer in water delivery systems.

When the motor is powered on, a force generated by the fan blades pushes the rotor assembly in a direction of a low friction thrust interface. When the motor is backdriven in a direction opposite the powered direction, the force generated by the fan blades pushes the rotor assembly in a direction of a higher-friction thrust interface, causing a tapered surface of the pinion and a tapered surface of a bearing retainer to be pressed against each other to produce a frictional braking force. The backdriven speed of the motor and drive device is therefore reduced, improving the reliability of the motor assembly. The invention can be applied to motor actuators used to control air dampers and other valves in gas or fluid delivery systems. The invention can also be used to reduce water hammer in water delivery systems.

    Abstract: A case retained external capacitor that can be installed onto the motor sleeve of an electric motor. The case retained capacitor includes a capacitor case having a mounting clip formed along its inner wall. The mounting clip is sized to be retained within an attachment slot stamped from the motor sleeve. The capacitor case receives a capacitor having lead wires that extend out of the capacitor case and into the interior defined by the motor sleeve. During construction of a motor utilizing the case retained capacitor of the present invention, the capacitor case is installed along the motor sleeve by sliding the mounting clip into the attachment slot formed in the motor sleeve. Once the capacitor case is in place, the end plate of the motor is installed to prevent separation of the capacitor case from the motor sleeve.

    Abstract: An electro-mechanical linear actuator including a drive motor, a capacitor, a die-cast gear box, and a drive nut system. The die-cast gear box is capable of receiving multiple drive motor diameters, and the drive motor may be staked to the gear box. A coverless-capacitor is fixed to the gearbox without fasteners, and knock-out plugs are die cast into the gearbox. Integral cord strain reliefs are provided to eliminate the need for plastic bushings. The assembly includes a metal drive key that mates with the drive shaft and an output gear for transmitting torque to the drive shaft. A plastic flange bearing provides bearing surfaces for the drive key and the drive shaft. A high efficiency reinforced self-guided ACME nut travels linearly along the drive shaft. A tight diameter is used on the ACME nut thread form, and a bearing section is provided on its outboard to maximize screw-to-nut alignment. Snap-fit adjustable cams allow easy adjustment of the travel of the drive nut along the shaft via limit switches.
