Abstract: Lanthanide complexes of &bgr;-diketonates which incorporate amines or their salts have been shown to exhibit intense photoluminescence and triboluminescence. These triboluminescent materials show a great deal of promise for remote sensing of strain, impact, pressure and fracture. The present invention is a new and more efficient process for synthesizing and testing triboluminescent and photoluminescent materials.
