Publication number: 20230077456Abstract: An ambulatory aid, such as one or more crutches, including a height adjustable shaft, a handle portion extending from a middle portion of the shaft, a foot portion, and an extension portion termination with a closed loop cuff for securing to the upper arm of a subject. The height adjustable shaft of the crutch can be adjustable at a top end, middle, a bottom end, or any combination thereof. The top of the cane shaft is aligned at a more posterior angle then the bottom of the shaft. The handle of the crutch is elongated and extends horizontally and lateral to the height adjustable shaft. In a particular embodiment, a posterior portion of the handle is longer, and optionally larger in surface area than an anterior portion of the handle such that the handle is configured so that when the person's hand is gripping the handle, the handle will be offset over the shaft.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 13, 2022Publication date: March 16, 2023Inventor: Linda Smith Swerdlow

Publication number: 20230079064Abstract: A mobility device including one or more sensors configured to transmit user mobility data to an external electronic device such as a smartphone or a computer. In embodiments, the mobility device can be a cane, crutch, walker, wheelchair, walking stick, or walking pole. A system for measuring real time mobility data of a user is also disclosed.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 13, 2022Publication date: March 16, 2023Inventor: Linda Smith Swerdlow

Publication number: 20220175595Abstract: A wheelchair configured to impart motion on one or more lower extremities of a user to inhibit inelasticity in joints of one or more lower extremities as a result of extended immobility, and to promote a more natural alignment of one or more upper extremities of the user during manipulation of the wheelchair. The wheelchair includes a seat and a backrest, at least two ground-engaging wheels, a hand mechanism assembly including a hand grip on each side of the wheelchair, and a foot mechanism assembly including a footrest on each of the wheelchair. When a force is applied to one of the hand grips, the wheels rotate for locomotion, and the foot mechanism assembly is actuated, causing the foot rest on the opposite side from the hand grip to move in an arced path, and vice versa, thereby imparting contralateral locomotion.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 6, 2020Publication date: June 9, 2022Applicant: Aligned As Designed, LLCInventors: Linda Smith SWERDLOW, Henning ZIEGER

Publication number: 20210346232Abstract: A three- or four-wheeled mobility walker/rollator including a foldable or collapsible frame assembly including a main or anterior frame assembly and a posterior frame assembly, three or four wheels coupled to the bottom or base of the frame assembly, and at least two crossbar handles coupled to the top of the frame assembly. The crossbar handles are placed one in front of the other with the first posterior crossbar handle being aligned with or slightly behind the middle of the back wheel posterior to the bottom of the walker frame. The crossbars can be of a sufficient width and curvature to provide a continuous support for the forearms when the user is standing, and can provide more frontal plane stability and balance during locomotion compared to the handles of a traditional walker.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 13, 2019Publication date: November 11, 2021Applicant: Aligned As Designed, LLCInventor: Linda Smith SWERDLOW

Patent number: 11020308Abstract: An ambulatory aid, such as a crutch, including a pair of support members connected by a load bearing handle member, and terminating at a first end with a top axilla-conforming member, and a second end with a foot piece. The crutch is used as a straight arm crutch, in which a user's weight is distributed in the hand to keep the arm straight, while preventing any load on the shoulder girdles. The crutches are configured to fit close to the body, to centralize the base of support, and keep the center of gravity lower, thereby keeping the body aligned as designed, and keeping the pectoral and pelvic girdles aligned. Proper body alignment during use results in greater stability and equilibrium of the user compared to traditional “tri-pod” creating crutches.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 2017Date of Patent: June 1, 2021Assignee: Aligned As Designed, LLCInventor: Linda Smith Swerdlow

Publication number: 20200323320Abstract: An ambulatory aid, such as a walking cane, including an elongate shaft, a handle at a first, upper end of the shaft, and a foot piece at a second, lower end of the shaft opposite the first end. The cane shaft can be adjustable at a top end, middle, a bottom end, or any combination thereof. The top of the cane shaft is aligned at a more posterior angle then the bottom of the shaft. The handle of the cane is elongated and extends posterior and anterior to the shaft. In a particular embodiment, a posterior portion of the handle is longer, and optionally larger in surface area than an anterior portion of the handle such that the handle is configured so that when the person's hand is gripping the handle, the handle will be offset over the shaft.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 28, 2020Publication date: October 15, 2020Inventor: Linda Smith Swerdlow
