The macrocarrier comprises substrate particles that are coated with a thermoresponsive polymer, which is capable of providing the macrocarrier with a cell-receiving surface and responding to a change in temperature to release cells from the macrocarrier. At least 50% of the substrate particles have a particle size of at least 1 mm. A system for the propagation of biological cells and a process for the propagation of biological cells are also described.
