  • Patent number: 6084862
Abstract: Time dispersion of a signal that has been received from a channel is measured by utilizing metrics to determine the energy inside an equalizer window and outside of the equalizer window. In one embodiment, the estimate of the energy outside the window is a difference between residual interference estimates. In another embodiment, the estimate of the energy outside the window is a difference between residual impulse response power estimates.

  • Patent number: 5903610
Abstract: In a receiver of a digital radio communication system, a combined channel estimate is formed by averaging a long channel estimate with a short channel estimate.

  • Patent number: 5884178
Abstract: A method and apparatus takes into account the Doppler shift of the information in a received burst, a frequency offset value is calculated for each received burst. For each burst, a signal quality value is calculated, which is compared with a predetermined signal quality threshold level. The absolute value of each of the frequency offset values whose signal quality value meets or exceeds the predetermined signal quality threshold is obtained. The frequency offset values whose signal quality values do not meet the threshold level are disregarded. The total mean of all of the absolute frequency offset values is then calculated. The total mean value is used to accurately estimate the speed of the mobile station. Consequently, the speed of faster and slower mobile stations can be readily distinguished, and a hierarchical cell structure can be effectively used to increase capacity and reduce handovers in a cellular communications system.

  • Patent number: 5859880
Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for a multi-branch receiver. A receive signal is received at various receiver branches of the multi-branch receiver. Subsequent to selected processing stages of processing of the receive signal, determinations are made of the signal quality of the signal in the receiver branches. When determinations are made that the signal quality of the signal of a particular receiver branch is of poor quality, further processing of the signal in the branch is squelched.

  • Patent number: 5657348
Abstract: A method in connection with digital mobile radio communication systems for forming, in a receiver, a quality measure SQ of the signal vector received in a signal burst comprises forming a first estimate E.sub.s of the energy of the useful signal of the signal vector, forming a second estimate E.sub.n of the energy of the remaining signal components of the signal vector, and forming the quality measure SQ of the signal vector in accordance with the formula SQ=K.sub.1 E.sub.s /(K.sub.2 +E.sub.n), where K.sub.1 and K.sub.2 are predetermined constants.
