The method includes when detecting a first operation of adjusting a play time of a multimedia file from a first time to a second time different from the first time in the process of playing the multimedia file, acquiring and storing a play progress of the multimedia file corresponding to the first time; and when detecting a second operation of a user, retrieving the play progress of the multimedia file corresponding to the first time and playing the multimedia file from the play progress corresponding to the first time in response to the second operation. With the method and electronic device, a video can accurately return to a play progress corresponding to a previous play time after a fast forward or rewind is performed in the process of playing the video.
