  • Patent number: 4568364
Abstract: Apparatus and a method for removal of acid gases from a first gas rich in carbon dioxide and for desulfurizing a second gas lean in carbon dioxide but containing sulfur compounds as impurities. The method includes contacting the first gas with a solvent capable of extracting carbon dioxide and sulfur compounds from the first gas. Then, the solvent containing carbon dioxide is separated from the solvent containing sulfur compounds. The second gas is then contacted with said solvent containing carbon dioxide under conditions sufficient to cause said solvent containing carbon dioxide to extract sulfur compounds from said second gas and to release carbon dioxide. The desulfurized second gas is thereafter separated from the solvent containing sulfur compounds from the second gas.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 22, 1984
Date of Patent: February 4, 1986
    Assignee: Bechtel International Corporation
Inventors: Lionel S. Galstaun, Robert F. Geosits

  • Patent number: 4017274
Abstract: This invention relates to a process for the methanation of scrubbed raw gases containing a concentration of carbon monoxide in excess of 3 mole percent and a methane concentration of less than 25 mole percent which comprises reacting a part of the carbon monoxide contained in the raw gases in the presence of an effective amount of at least one steam reforming catalyst contained in a fixed bed, substantially adiabatic reactor with steam, water, or a steam and water mixture provided directly to the reaction zone to effect the shift conversion of a part of the carbon monoxide according to the equationCO + H.sub.2 O = C0.sub.2 + H.sub.2and simultaneously to effect methanation of the remaining carbon monoxide with hydrogen up to the equilibrium point of the equationCO + 3H.sub.2 = CH.sub.4 + H.sub.2 Othe amount of steam, water, or steam and water mixture being sufficient to maintain the temperature of the reactants below that at which cracking of the methane product in the methanation reaction can take place.
