  • Publication number: 20050034159
Abstract: A home video network, and a home video and data network, utilizing wireless protocol communications over coaxial cable (CX) are disclosed. In the home video network, a main network station (10) includes video processing functionality, such as one or more of a DVD player, personal video recorder (PVR), and a set-top box (STB) for cable or satellite television reception. The main network station (10) also includes a matched splitter (27) that receives coaxial cable (CX) inputs, and provides low-pass filtered and high-pass filtered output. The low-pass filtered output (LF) corresponding to video signals is provided to the video processing functionality (20) and the high-pass filtered output (HF) corresponding to wireless protocol communications is provided to a wireless access point function (22).

  • Publication number: 20050021864
Abstract: A system and method for wireless local area network throughput enhancement includes an access point and an endpoint station in a wireless computer network transmitting data packets over radio frequency signals, and reordering the data packets into a megapacket in the access point using concatenation of the data packets. The method provides a significant throughput enhancement on wireless networks including IEEE 802.11 networks.

  • Publication number: 20040228390
Abstract: A method provides frequency and phase offset estimation in a SCDMA burst receiver (such as a DOCSIS 2.0 SCDMA burst receiver) by application of the known Least Square (LS) parameter estimation algorithm to a pre-known transmitted sequence, called preamble, in order to optimally characterize the phase and frequency offsets affecting the transmitted data. The LS parameter estimation algorithm is adapted to SCDMA burst receiver specifications by changing index calculations to fit according to SCDMA preamble locations. Improved estimation accuracy can be achieved by using weighted least squares that disregard symbols affected by impulse and burst noise. Weighted least squares can further impart more weight to last symbols to more accurately estimate contemporary impairments. The method is particularly useful for communication systems having large frequency and phase offsets as in the DOCSIS 2.0 SCDMA burst receiver.

  • Publication number: 20040179549
Abstract: A method provides forward compatibility hooks for DFS and TPC for WLAN, so that the same mechanisms can be employed (with only minor changes/additions) for other regulatory domains, other bands, and/or other purposes. The current IEEE 802.11 h standard defines mechanisms for dynamic frequency selection (DFS) and transmit power control (TPC) that may be used to satisfy regulatory requirements for operation in the 5 GHz band in Europe. The present method provides a format to allow other bands, and relates to the supported channels element, channel switch announcement element, and the Basic/CCA/RPI histogram request/report. The method optionally reserves more than 3-bits in the Basic report (Map subfield).

  • Publication number: 20030231658
Abstract: In digital communications that utilize a data packet format wherein each data packet includes a physical layer (PHY) component and a media access control layer (MAC) component, the media access control layer component can be selectively protected by forward error correction (FEC). The receiving end receives an indication as to whether FEC has been applied, and makes an FEC decision based (12-15) on this indication. The accuracy of the received-side FEC decision and the robustness of the FEC indication can be improved by: making the FEC decision based on the results of FEC decoding applied to a media access control layer header within the media access control layer component; providing an FEC indication bit in the physical layer component; and using a plurality of bits to encode the FEC indication in either the physical layer component or the media access control layer component.

  • Publication number: 20030214905
Abstract: The present invention provides a system, method, and apparatus for providing improved quality of service in a wireless local area network transmission system, the network comprising at least two devices, the quality of services defined at least in part by data communicated by a first of the devices to other devices in the network through one or more quality of service parameters. In accordance with the present invention, a change indicator is initialized at the start of a monitoring period. Then, during the monitoring period, the stored parameters are monitored for changes in those of thee stored parameters that define the quality of service. When a change is detected, the change indicator is updated in response and other devices in the network are periodically notified of the current value of the change indicator. The other devices are operable to update locally stored quality of service parameters in response to detecting a change in the change indicator.

  • Publication number: 20030123564
Abstract: In frequency channel communications, constraints on transmit power characteristics can be complied with by implementing constellation shaping (15, 71) in the transmitter. In transmitters which use transmit filtering (91) to comply with constraints on transmit power characteristics, the transmitter can also implement, upstream of the transmit filter, precoding (92) designed for a desired cooperation with the transmit filter.
