  • Publication number: 20090093776
Abstract: The present invention discloses a linear-edged 3D solid or hollow microneedle or microknife. A tip edge of the microneedle or microknife is a linear edge parallel to a group of (111) oriented facets of monocrystalline silicon. The linear edge extends along a straight or curved line and has a narrow width. An opening is formed on one or each side adjoining the linear tip edge, or is formed at the middle of the linear tip edge. The opening is communicated with a channel formed from the bottom surface of the microneedle or microknife, so as to form a through hole from the tip to the bottom of the microneedle or microknife. The triangular channel has six side walls of (111) oriented facets. The microneedle or microknife is used for transdermal drug delivery, body fluid withdrawing or the like. Methods for producing a microneedle or microknife are also disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20060113879
Abstract: The present invention relates to a piezoelectric micro acoustic sensor based on ferroelectric materials. In one embodiment, more than one electrode pairs are provided within at least one of the central portion and the peripheral portion of a ferroelectric film of the sensor, a polarizing voltage is applied to each electrode pair so that regions of the ferroelectric film between each electrode pair is polarized along the thickness direction, and in a same stress state portion of the film regions of the ferroelectric film between neighboring electrode pairs are polarized in opposite directions, hence the neighboring electrode pairs within the same stress state portion have opposite voltages when the ferroelectric film vibrates. In one embodiment, all of the electrode pairs are connected in series, so that the output voltage of thus connected electrode pairs equals to the sum of voltages of each single pair. Therefore the voltage sensitivity of the piezoelectric micro acoustic sensor is improved significantly.

Abstract: The present invention concerns a high throughput electrorotation chip having an array of electrorotation units and methods of use thereof. To make the high throughput electrorotation chip, a plurality of electrorotation units (EU) are fabricated on a substrate or support and each EU is capable of producing a rotating electric field upon the application of an appropriate electrical signal. Exemplary embodiments include a row-column configuration of EUs having four electrode elements realized through two conductive-layers. The electrode elements may be linear, concave, or convex. Thin plates having one or multiple holes are bound to high-throughput electrorotation chips to form assay chambers having one or multiple wells. Particles can be introduced to the wells and electrorotation measurements can be performed on the particles.
