Both the waterproof, water vapor permeable functional-layer upper and the lining upper are in the shape of a sock and introduced separately into the shoe. The functional-layer upper and lining upper are preferably joined to the exterior upper only at a top opening of the shoe construction through which a foot is inserted. The functional-layer upper can be composed of individual pieces that are joined together by seams that are sealed, or it can be seamless.
