  • Patent number: 4427540
Abstract: The oxidation resistance of carbon bodies formed from petroleum coke is increased by inhibiting the catalytic effects of vanadium and/or nickel impurities in the coker feedstock through utilization of an effective amount of an inorganic magnesium compound or an organo-magnesium compound present in such feedstock during coking.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 8, 1982
Date of Patent: January 24, 1984
    Assignee: Great Lakes Carbon Corporation
Inventors: Harry L. Hsu, Lloyd I. Grindstaff, Leslie H. Juel
  • Patent number: 4312745
Abstract: Very fine particle size chromic oxide is dispersed in a high sulfur petroleum coker feedstock before or during delayed coking to produce a needle coke with low CTE and negligible puffing on heating to the temperature of graphitization.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 31, 1980
Date of Patent: January 26, 1982
    Assignee: Great Lakes Carbon Corporation
Inventors: Harry L. Hsu, Lloyd I. Grindstaff, Mack P. Whittaker
  • Patent number: 4291008
Abstract: Low sulfur calcined coke having an adequate density value for industrial consumers is produced from high sulfur raw coke by treating the coke in three heating stages under controlled conditions, one of the stages being in the presence of added hydrogen.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 27, 1980
Date of Patent: September 22, 1981
    Assignee: Great Lakes Carbon Corporation
Inventors: Harry L. Hsu, Edward E. Hardin, Lloyd I. Grindstaff
  • Patent number: 4284612
Abstract: Organic fibers are oxidized, ground and blended with a source of silica. Heat treatment of the blend in the range of 1400.degree. to 1700.degree. C. results in the formation of SiC whiskers. Various fibers including PAN, pitch and rayon which can be processed to form carbon and/or graphite fibers can be used as the carbon source. Ashed rice hulls as the source of silica are blended with the chopped fiber to form the SiC whiskers.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 28, 1980
Date of Patent: August 18, 1981
    Assignee: Great Lakes Carbon Corporation
Inventors: Ottis J. Horne, Jr., Lloyd I. Grindstaff
  • Patent number: 4248844
Abstract: SiC whiskers are made by separating a quantity of rice hulls into two portions, carbonizing one portion in a non-oxidizing atmosphere, ashing the other portion in air, combining the carbonized residue and amorphous SiO.sub.2 obtained, and heating in a noble gas atmosphere.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 28, 1980
Date of Patent: February 3, 1981
    Assignee: Great Lakes Carbon Corporation
Inventors: David E. Ramsey, Jr., Lloyd I. Grindstaff
  • Patent number: 4233148
Abstract: Electrodes suitable for the electrolysis of solutions, in particular for the production of aluminum in Hall-Heroult reduction cells, are composed of SnO.sub.2 with various amounts of conductive agents and sintering promoters principally GeO.sub.2, Co.sub.3 O.sub.4, Bi.sub.2 O.sub.3, Sb.sub.2 O.sub.3, MnO.sub.2, CuO, Pr.sub.2 O.sub.3, In.sub.2 O.sub.3, MoO.sub.3.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 1, 1979
Date of Patent: November 11, 1980
    Assignee: Great Lakes Carbon Corporation
Inventors: David E. Ramsey, Lloyd I. Grindstaff
  • Patent number: 4160814
Abstract: Low sulfur calcined coke is produced from high sulfur raw coke without substantially lowering its bulk density by heating the coke at a first temperature such that no more than about 70 wt.% of the volatile matter is removed therefrom and then heating the partially devolatilized coke at a higher temperature sufficient to effect calcination and desulfurization.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 1, 1978
Date of Patent: July 10, 1979
    Assignee: Great Lakes Carbon Corporation
Inventors: Edward E. Hardin, Dean H. Guffey, Lloyd I. Grindstaff
  • Patent number: 3943213
Abstract: Graphite composite, prepared by heating a material which forms a graphitizable carbon to mesophase, adding carbon fiber composite and carbonizing and graphitizing the shaped composite.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 7, 1972
Date of Patent: March 9, 1976
