Generally, a multiuser application allow interaction by multiple different users with a single executing instance of the application. Implementations include a multiuser operating system and a multiuser application programming interface that enable interaction by multiple users with an executing instance of a multiuser application.

The embodiments include receiving a request for an exclusive allocation of one or more system resources for a first application, the one or more system resources being useable by the first application and one or more second applications; determining an appropriate amount of the one or more system resources that are to be allocated exclusively to the first application; and partitioning the one or more system resources into a first portion that is allocated for the exclusive use of the first application and a second portion that is not allocated for the exclusive use of the first application, the second portion being available for the use of the one or more second applications.

A client component is installed via a bootstrap process that uses authentication information to accomplish this task. Once installed, it integrates itself into a typical gaming display. Various console hardware details are used to enable communication between the client component and downstream servers providing the content. Once up and running, the client component allows users to watch television as if they were interacting with a set-top box. Users may switch between various applications on the gaming console, including but not limited to game titles, DVR, VOD, DVD programs, and so on.

Abstract: A system is described that is specifically adapted for use in a resource-constrained set-top box environment. The system uses an interpreter-based common language runtime (CLR) that is specifically configured for use in the set-top box environment. The system also includes a unique application manager and UIpane manager that are specifically configured for use in the set-top box environment. The application manager pauses a current application when another application presents a user interface presentation which interferes with the current application's user interface presentation. In addition, the system includes graphics functionality for providing transitions effects, for allowing a user to change color palette and resolution, and so forth. The graphics functionality directly uses the graphics capabilities of the set top box (such as the set top box's line control register) whenever possible to enable applications to execute more quickly.
