  • Patent number: 6657921
Abstract: A system for collecting seismic data from geologic formations underlying water. A plurality of hydrodynamic housings are deployable in the water and are permitted to descend at a fast rate through the water until the housings contact the geologic formations. A controller engaged with each housing reconfigures the housing to enhance contact between the housing and the geologic formations and to reduce impact of ocean currents acting against the housing. A marine seismic sensor is engaged with each housing to detect seismic data and to sensor orientation. Each housing can be disconnected from the associated marine seismic sensor to facilitate retrieval of the seismic sensors to the water surface.

  • Patent number: 6556510
Abstract: A system and method for generating acoustic source energy in marine seismic operations. A plurality of acoustic energy sources are integrated within seismic streamers to facilitate deployment, power distribution and signal communication. The acoustic energy sources can comprise slotted cylinders activatable with piezoelectric elements. By providing an array of lightweight, energy efficient acoustic energy sources throughout a seismic receiver array, both zero-offset and far-offset reflection data can be recorded. The acoustic energy discharge can be swept over a time interval, or steered in a selected pattern throughout the array, to significantly reduce the impulse energy released into the water. The reflected signals can be compressed back into an impulse for subsequent data processing. Bi-static reflections can be generated simultaneously with the zero-offset source-receiver locations to improve the vertical and horizontal resolution of data.

  • Patent number: 6552961
Abstract: A system for detecting source acoustic energy in seismic operations. The system is operable on land and in marine applications. On land, a piezoelectric film is positioned between a vibrator or other source baseplate and the soil. Compression of the piezoelectric film generates an electrical signal proportional to the total ground force, including force due to flexural or resonance of source components, exerted by the seismic source. In marine applications, a source displaces water to produce a pressure pulse in the water, and a piezoelectric film detects the resulting pressure pulse and the flexural movement of the source to produce an electrical signal proportional to the movement of the active component.

  • Patent number: 6288976
Abstract: An apparatus and a method for anchoring a seismic geophone to soil. The apparatus comprises a base having a base section for engagement with the geophone. The base also has an anchor end attachable to the soil to restrict movement of the geophone after said base section is engaged with the geophone and after said anchor end is attached to the soil. A latch can detachably secure the base section to the geophone or to a seismic cable attached to the geophone, and the base can comprise a biodegradable material. The method of the invention attaches the base anchor end to the soil so that the base section engages the geophone to restrict movement of the geophone from the desired location relative to the soil.

  • Patent number: 6285956
Abstract: A method for moving seismic streamers or acoustic energy sources through water in marine geophysical operations. The equipment can be deployed or retrieved from one or more vessels, and two or more tow vehicles maneuver seismic streamers through the water independently of a seismic vessel. Manned or unmanned tow vehicles can tow the streamers ahead of, behind, or to the side of a seismic vessel, or can form an array independent of the seismic vessel. Tow vehicles can be located at both ends to change the tow direction. The invention is particularly useful in customizing an array configuration, in reorienting the array at the end of each survey line, and permits deployment of receivers and sources in different combinations. By decoupling the tow vehicles and streamers from the source vessel, turning time at the survey region borders and the possibility of streamer entanglement is significantly reduced.

  • Patent number: 6230840
Abstract: A marine vibrator has a hollow body formed of one shell or of two opposed shells defining an inner space therein with vibrator apparatus within the hollow body. At least one shell has a curved shape, and the shell can have a streamlined shape with relatively low hydrodynamic drag. Certain embodiments include one or more exterior control members to facilitate positioning of the vibrator in water. Other than their mating ends, when two shells are used the two shells may be different in shape and volume or they may be identical. In preferred two-shell embodiments, there is a flexible seal between and connecting the two opposed shells. In certain aspects the inner space is filled with gas. A vibrator apparatus in one aspect applies equal and opposite forces to the shells of a two-shell vibrator or to opposed sides of a single shell vibrator.

  • Patent number: 6076630
Abstract: A marine seismic source for generating acoustic source energy. A housing has a continuous exterior perimeter which is moveable to displace water. Movement of the housing can be accomplished by providing alternating convex and concave exterior surfaces connected with inflection points. The composite shape provides movement inwardly or outwardly, and can be moved with different types of actuators. Piezoelectric elements can be activated to move the housing surfaces and to change the internal housing volume. The resulting pressure pulse provides acoustic source energy useful for the evaluation of subterranean geologic formations and for other purposes.

  • Patent number: 6000479
Abstract: A system for drilling a slender borehole through geologic formations. The system comprises a hollow drill pipe having a drill bit for maintaining gauge of the borehole. A pulsed generator such as a homopolar generator provides the power for operating a downhole rail gun. One or more projectiles are accelerated by the rail gun to impact the geologic formations and to extend the borehole length. • Patent number: 6002648
Abstract: A seismic method and system for generating seismic source energy in marine geophysical operations. A slotted housing is moveable by the actuation of piezoelectric elements to generate high power, low frequency seismic source signals. When the piezoelectric elements are activated by electric power, displacement of such elements is enlarged by the slotted housing to generate a pressure pulse in the water. The invention permits single source pressure pulse generation having sufficient power and low frequency. The housing can be towed by a seismic vessel or can be integrated into a self-contained marine vehicle.

  • Patent number: 5969297
Abstract: An apparatus for generating signals and energy for transmission to a large mass. The apparatus incorporates a pulsed generator such as a compensated pulsed alternator for storing and for discharging large amounts of energy in a controlled manner for transmission through a vibrator or similar electromechanical device. In the field of seismic exploration, the apparatus discharges seismic source energy into a land mass or water to generate seismic waves which are reflected from the interface between subsurface geologic formations. The pulsed generator permits the seismic source energy to be discharged in a controlled manner to shape the energy signal, and permits large quantities of energy to be discharged to increase the penetration depth and strength of the reflected signals.
