Abstract: A surface moiety for use in chromatography which is attached to a solid support, said surface moiety having a structure which comprises at least two arylene groups wherein the arylene groups are separated from each other by a hydrocarbylene group. The surface moiety is attached to a solid support to form a stationary phase material. Methods for making the stationary phase material and using the material are provided also as are a chromatography apparatus which contains the material and a surface modifying agent which may be used to attach the surface moiety to the solid support.

Abstract: The invention is directed to water soluble silane compositions that are essentially alcohol free comprising compounds of the structure:(RO).sub.3-x (HO).sub.x Si(CH.sub.2).sub.3 (OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2).sub.b OH(Ia ){(RO).sub.2-y (HO).sub.y Si(CH.sub.2).sub.3 (OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2).sub.b O}.sub.z (IIa)wherein x ranges from 1 to 3, b ranges from 1 to 30, y is 0 or 1, and z ranges from 1 to 3, and R is an aryl or alkyl having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms. The invention further comprises methods for forming such compounds and for their use in preparing water soluble silane compositions by reaction with relative insoluble silane compounds terminated in functional groups selected from the group comprising epoxies, vinyls, mercaptos and acrylates.
