  • Publication number: 20020146667
Abstract: A method and system is disclosed for a staged learning process for situational awareness training using integrated media wherein a mix of classroom lectures, computer-based training and immersive simulation is used to advance the student from an operational stage to a tactical stage to a strategic stage. During the simulation exercises, the student is presented with a realistic interactive driving environment and external stimuli. The simulator measures and records the student's performance, generating a score based on various factors. The student is then able to review his or her performance or parts thereof from multiple perspectives. The process teaches, tests and reinforces situational awareness in drivers through an orderly, consistent “preview, drive, review” procedure and gives the student a level of situational awareness generally achieved by a driver with greater experience.

  • Patent number: 6064318
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a portable system for automatic data acquisition and processing of traffic information in real-time. The system incorporates a plurality of sensors operatively positioned upstream of a work zone or roadway incident with each of the sensors being adapted to detect current traffic conditions, at least one variable message device positioned upstream of the work zone or roadway incident, a plurality of remote station controllers, each operatively connected to the plurality of sensors and the variable message device, and a central system controller located within remote communication range of the remote station controllers, wherein the central system controller and the plurality of remote station controllers are capable of remotely communicating with one another. Each of the sensors is adapted to output traffic condition data to its corresponding remote station controller.

  • Patent number: 5888074
Abstract: A system for testing and evaluating driver situational awareness incorporates a device for displaying road and traffic images to a subject being tested, road and traffic image data for simulating operation of a vehicle to be outputted on the display device, instruction data to be outputted at least on the display device, input devices for inputting response data from the test subject in response to road and traffic image data generated on the display means, and a control device for controlling the operation of the system. The control device incorporates a vision test component for conducting a vision test of the subject and a driving reaction test component for conducting a driving reaction test of the subject.
