Abstract: Disclosed is a process for producing normal alpha olefins having less than 1.0% saturates content, and typically no more than 0.40% saturates content. The process involves forming a mixture of normal alpha olefins and tri(higher)alkyl aluminum compounds, contacting this mixture with a cobalt-containing transalkylation catalyst, and hydrolyzing the normal alpha olefin/transalkylation catalyst mixture to minimize the amount of saturates formed. In one embodiment, the catalyst is a cobalt- and nickel-containing transalkylation catalyst. After hydrolysis, the resulting normal alpha olefins contain essentially no Group VIII metal that is capable of transalkylation.

Abstract: New N-carbamylindolines which are useful in combating unwanted vegetation by both pre-emergent and post-emergent application are compounds having the structural formula ##STR1## in which R and R.sup.3 are hydrogen or methyl, R.sup.1 is hydrogen or N,N-dimethylsulfamyl, N,N-diethylsulfamyl, N-methoxy-N-methyl-sulfamyl, bromo or chloro, X is hydrogen or fluoro and R.sup.2 is hydrogen or dimethylsulfamyl, with the provision that at least one and no more than two substituents represented by R.sup.1, R.sup.2, and R.sup.3 and X are present.

Abstract: A method of regulating the growth of plants, including combating unwanted vegetation, comprises applying to the plants, either on seed, the soil or directly on the plants an effective amount of a novel compound of the class having the general structural formula ##STR1## in which one of Q.sub.1, Q.sub.2, Q.sub.3 or Q.sub.4 is N, X is --OH or --O--(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl) and Y is H or X and Y together represent a bond between carbon and nitrogen atoms and R is H or one or two of the following substituents: --Br, --Cl, --F, --I, --CF.sub.3, --CH.sub.3, --NO.sub.2 or --C.tbd.N, or an agriculturally acceptable salt thereof.

Abstract: A novel class of compounds which are useful as plant growth regulators is disclosed, having the general structural formula: ##STR1## R.sup.1 is; C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkyl, nitro or halo and n is zero or an integer from 1 to 4R.sup.2 is; C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkyl, or benzyl, n' is zero, 1 or 2 andAr is; naphthyl, phenyl or phenyl bearing thereon from one to three of the substituents: cyano, benzyloxy, nitro, bromo, chloro, trifluoromethyl and C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkyl, alkenyl, alkoxy alkylthio and alkyl-substituted amino.

Abstract: New compounds which are useful as herbicides and fungicides have the general structural formula ##STR1## in which R is C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 straight chain saturated or unsaturated alkoxy, amino, dimethylamino or straight chain C.sub.1 to C.sub.3 monoalkylamino, R.sup.1 is methyl or ethyl, X is nitro, methoxy, methyl, ethyl, Br, Cl or F in which n is an integer from 0 to 2, at least one of the 2 and 6 positions is unsubstituted and Y is H or a C.sub.1 to C.sub.5 branched or unbranched, saturated or unsaturated alkyl or cycloalkyl substituent group.

Abstract: A class of 5-ureido and thioureido-1,3,4-thiadiazole-2-sulfonamides bearing various substituents on both sulfonamide and ureido nitrogen atoms is employed to combat unwanted vegetation both pre- and post-emergently.

Abstract: The industrial herbicide 5-(1,3,3-trimethylureido)-N,N-dimethyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole-2-sulfonamide and other compounds of similar structure may be made by a novel procedure in which the first step is the oxidative chlorination of a 2-alkylamino-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole to yield the corresponding sulfonyl chloride. The subject compound which possesses five methyl substituent groups is more effective as a herbicide than compounds which contain other alkyl substituents or a lesser number of methyl substituents.
