Publication number: 20230090397Abstract: A device configured to administer a medication can comprise a lower housing that includes a housing latch. The device can further comprise a needle guard that is movable relative to the lower housing along a first direction from a first position to a second position so as to expose a needle, and an upper housing supported relative to the lower housing. The upper housing can be configured to move with respect to the lower housing along a second direction from a pre-use position to a dispensed position. The housing latch can releasably interfere with the upper housing when the upper housing is in the pre-use position so as to prevent the upper housing from moving toward the dispensed position, and the movement of the needle guard toward the second position, causes the interference to be removed, thereby allowing the upper housing to move toward the second position.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 29, 2022Publication date: March 23, 2023Inventors: Lorin Olson, Vaclav Vojan, Juergen E. Pfrang, Peter Krulevitch, Jingli Wang, Nicholas Foley, Mingqi Zhao, Paul Tashjian

Patent number: 7303726Abstract: A system employing an integrated analyte test strip including a biosensor and lancet is disclosed. The integration of lancet and the sensor elements eliminates the need to align the sensor to the biologic fluid sample after a lancet and lancing device are used in combination to pierce the skin. The system preferably includes a device comprising two body portions that slide relative to each other to both cock and fire a test strip at a target site. Meter reading and test strip disposal may be accomplished by removing the device from the target site. The device preferably employs a magazine loaded with test strips, with one strip being taken from the magazine each time the device is actuated. It preferably also includes a magazine in a cap to store spent test strips for disposal. The device may be turned on an off simply by removal and return of the cap.Type: GrantFiled: May 9, 2002Date of Patent: December 4, 2007Assignee: Lifescan, Inc.Inventors: Devin McAllister, Lorin Olson, Borzu Sohrab

Publication number: 20070112281Abstract: A cap for a dermal tissue lancing device includes a retainer and a ring-shaped cap body. The retainer has a proximal end configured for engagement with the dermal tissue lancing device, a distal end with a cap body engagement feature and an opening. The ring-shaped cap body has a distal compression surface, borders the opening and is securely and revolvingly engaged with the cap body engagement feature. When a force is exerted on the distal compression surface during use of the cap, the ring-shaped cap body revolves (e.g., inward with respect to the opening) while remaining securely engaged with the retainer.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 17, 2005Publication date: May 17, 2007Inventor: Lorin Olson

Publication number: 20070112367Abstract: A method for lancing a dermal tissue target site includes contacting a distal compression surface of a ring-shaped cap body of a dermal tissue lancing device cap with the dermal tissue target site. Subsequently, the dermal tissue lancing device cap is urged towards the dermal tissue target site such that a force is exerted on the distal compression surface that results in the ring-shaped cap body revolving while remaining securely engaged within a retainer of the dermal tissue lancing device cap. The dermal tissue target site is thereafter lanced with the dermal tissue lancing device.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 17, 2005Publication date: May 17, 2007Inventor: Lorin Olson

Publication number: 20060184189Abstract: A cap for use with a dermal tissue lancing device (that includes a housing and a lancet movable with respect to the housing) includes a proximal end for engaging with the housing, a distal end for engaging with dermal tissue and an opening for a portion of the lancet to pass through. The distal end of the cap includes portions for engaging dermal tissue. These portions are resiliently deformable such that, when the cap contacts and is urged towards dermal tissue, the portions deform resiliently, engaging the dermal tissue and approaching theretogether. A process for the collection of a fluid sample (e.g., blood) from dermal tissue includes providing a dermal tissue lancing device with a housing, a cap and a lancet that is moveable with respect to the housing and the cap. The cap includes a proximal end for engaging with the housing, a distal end for engaging with dermal tissue, and an opening for a portion of the lancet to pass through.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 12, 2003Publication date: August 17, 2006Inventors: Lorin Olson, Anne Thomson, Damian Baskeyfield, Christopher Leach, Richard Day, Sebastian Bohm

Patent number: 7060192Abstract: Methods of fabricating devices for collecting a sample of physiological and for measuring a characteristic, e.g., an analyte concentration, of the sampled physiological sample. The devices are in the form of a test strip which include a biosensor and at least one skin-piercing element which is a planar extension of a portion of the biosensor. The fabrication methods provide various or forming the test strip and the skin-piercing element.Type: GrantFiled: May 9, 2002Date of Patent: June 13, 2006Assignee: LifeScan, Inc.Inventors: Vadim V Yuzhakov, Devin V. Publication number: 20060100656Abstract: A compact lancing includes a housing, a moveable lancet holder disposed within the housing and configured to hold a lancet, a launching mechanism disposed within the housing, and arming and trigger mechanisms disposed at least partially within the housing. In addition, the launching mechanism includes a launch spring and a retraction spring. The lancet holder, launching mechanism, arming mechanism and trigger mechanism are operatively connected to lance a target site with a lancet held by the moveable lancet holder. In addition, the retraction spring is configured in an essentially concentric arrangement with the launch spring, thereby providing for compactness in design.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 28, 2004Publication date: May 11, 2006Inventors: Lorin Olson, Koon-Wah Leong

Publication number: 20050169810Abstract: Devices for dispensing test strips and methods of using the same are provided. The subject devices are characterized by having a housing made of a cover and a base configured to retain a plurality of test strips. In certain embodiments, the height of the base is less than the height of each of the test strips, such that a portion of each of the test strips extends beyond the distal or top edge of the base. The subject devices may further be characterized as having a substantially air and moisture tight seal. In using the subject devices, a plurality of test strips stored in a subject device are provided. A single test strip is removed from the subject device by moving the test strip distal to the remaining test strips. Also provided by the subject invention are kits for use in practicing the subject methods.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 31, 2005Publication date: August 4, 2005Inventors: Robert Hagen, Lorin Olson, Robert Shartle, Colleen Hagen
