  • Patent number: 4904325
Abstract: A transfer-metallization method in which a metal coating is applied to a top layer of a metallizing film, and the film is then brought into contact with a substrate such that the metal coating is transferred from the top layer to the substrate. The film is a three-layer biaxially-oriented transfer film produced by coextrusion and having a base layer of a polypropylene homopolymer and top layers applied to the two surfaces thereof. The base layer contains an additive depot of migrating monomers in an amount of 0.01 to 2.0 percent by weight, relative to the weight of the polymer constituting the base layer. The top layers are comprised of polypropylene that has a lower viscosity than the polypropylene of the base layer.

  • Patent number: 4883698
Abstract: For packaging purposes, metallized multilayer films containing a biaxially oriented polypropylene film as a base layer should have high scratch resistance, good heat-sealing properties, such as low heat-sealing temperature, attractive visual properties, such as high metallic luster, excellent metallizability of the base layer or of a covering layer, and also good processing properties during metallization, printing, slitting, and during processing on fast-running packaging machines. This requirement profile is fulfilled by a multilayer film of asymmetric structure containing a biaxially oriented base layer 4 composed of polypropylene, a heat-sealing layer 3 which contains an additive combination composed of pigment in platelet form and siloxane and which is optionally modified by an addition of polypropylene and a hydrocarbon resin, and of a corona-treated polypropylene covering layer 2 which is not capable of being heat-sealed.

  • Patent number: 4863032
Abstract: A packaging wrapper for disk-shaped magnetic information carriers is disclosed. The wrapper is formed by folding over a blank to form a flat wrapper. The wrapper has projecting tabs jutting out laterally from the sides of the front wrapper wall and overlap zones on the rear wrapper wall formed as a result of folding-over of the projecting tabs. The projecting tabs are firmly bonded to the rear wrapper wall by means of welding. The blank for forming the packaging wrapper is formed from a biaxially oriented, opaque multi-ply film comprising a base layer consisting essentially of polypropylene and fillers. The fillers are present in a quantity in the range from 10 to 30% by weight, relative to the total weight of the polypropylene and fillers.

  • Patent number: 4758396
Abstract: A process for the preparation of a biaxially stretch-oriented film having at least one opaque layer is described. The opaque layer is composed essentially of propylene polymer and fillers in a quantity of about 10 to 40% by weight, relative to the total weight of propylene polymer and fillers. In production, the granules are melted in a screw extruder, are forced through a die and are formed by cooling to give a preformed film. The preformed film is then stretch-oriented both along the machine direction and transversely perpendicular to the machine direction and is then heat-set. The fillers are added in the form of a masterbatch to the granules of unfilled polymers. The masterbatch should have a filler content of more than about 30% by weight.

  • Patent number: 4734317
Abstract: A polyolefin film having a base layer composed essentially of propylene polymers and having sealing layers present on both sides, composed essentially of sealable olefin polymers. Polydialkylsiloxane is incorporated in a first of the two sealing layers, and this layer is not subjected to corona treatment. The second sealing layer is subjected to corona treatment and has polydialkylsiloxane, not incorporated, but present on its outer surface, the polydialkylsiloxane having been transferred to this layer by contact with the sealing layer in which polyidalkylsiloxane is incorporated. The relative polydialkylsiloxane occupancy on the second layer, which is determined by means of ESCA spectroscopy, is not more than 15. The three-layer polyolefin film is prepared by a coextrusion process. It is particularly suitable for use as a packaging film on high-speed packaging machines.

  • Patent number: 4725466
Abstract: A non-sealable polypropylene multi-layer film comprises a base layer and at least one covering layer, the base layer as wella as the covering layer or layers being formed of propylene homopolymers. The covering layers contain a combination of additives composed of (a) from 0.2 to 1.0% by weight of a long-chain aliphatic amine, (b) from 0.2 to 1.0% by weight of a polydialkylsiloxane, and (c) from 0.1 to 1.0% by weight of a platelet-shaped inorganic pigment, the platelets of the pigments being disposed substantially parallel to the surface of the covering layer. The film is preferably produced by a coextrusion process. It is preferably used as a laminating film, an interleaving film or a metallizable film. The novel non-sealable polypropylene multi-layer film has, in particular, good anti-blocking and slip properties, good optical properties, good antistatic properties, and a high scratch resistance. The film can be subjected to a corona treatment without thereby adversely influencing its properties.

  • Patent number: 4720420
Abstract: A sealable, transparent polyolefinic multilayer film composed of a polypropylene base layer, a non-sealable surface layer, and a sealable surface layer, and process therefor. The sealable surface layer has a low minimum sealing temperature and is made from a copolymer of propylene and ethylene or butene-1 units and/or a terpolymer of ethylene, propylene and butene-1 units. The non-sealable layer is a combination of a propylene homopolymer, a slip agent, and an anti-blocking agent. The process includes coextruding the three layers, biaxially stretching the coextruded film, and subjecting the non-sealable layer to a corona-discharge treatment.

  • Patent number: 4698261
Abstract: An opaque polyolefin film having a three-layer support film and transparent or clear polyolefin covering layers which cover the two surfaces of the support film. In the support film, either the inner layer or the two intermediate layers arranged between the inner layer and the covering layers are composed of a filler-free polyolefin which is modified with a natural or synthetic resin having a softening point ranging from 70.degree. C. to 180.degree. C. The respective non-modified polyolefin layer or layers of the support film have a filler and exhibit a vacuole structure which produces a relatively low density film of less than 0.9 g/cm.sup.3. The production of the opaque polyolefin film comprising five layers is carried out by coextrusion and biaxial stretching, followed by heat setting the coextruded film. The film is advantageously used for packaging purposes.

  • Patent number: 4692837
Abstract: The multi-layer film comprises a propylene polymer base layer having a stabilizer content of up to 0.2% by weight and outer layers, also composed of propylene polymer, having a stabilizer content of at least 0.3% by weight. The outer layers contain 3 to 10 times the amount of stabilizer present in the base layer, as a result of which the initial value of the dielectric loss factor tan of the multi-layer film is kept low, and the loss factor exhibits only a slight increase with time.

  • Patent number: 4663219
Abstract: A coextruded multi-layer opaque film which has been biaxially oriented by stretching in the longitudinal direction and transverse direction at selected temperatures and with selected stretch ratios, and a method for producing the film. The film has a base layer of polypropylene or a copolymer thereof, and fillers. Its density is 0.4 to 0.6 g/cm.sup.3, the amount of filler, based on the mixture of polypropylene and filler, is 16 to 30% by weight, and the particles of the filler employed have a mean size of 2 to 5 .mu.m. Because of its reduced tendency to recover after folding, the film is particularly suitable for packaging purposes. One or more surface layers can be applied on either or both sides of the base layer.

  • Patent number: 4652489
Abstract: A sealable, opaque polyolefinic multilayer film composed of a polypropylene base layer, a non-sealable surface layer, and a sealable surface layer, and process therefor. The sealable surface layer has a low minimum sealing temperature and is made from a copolymer of propylene and ethylene or butene-1 units and/or a terpolymer of ethylene, propylene and butene-1 units. The non-sealable layer is a combination of a propylene homopolymer and a slip agent. The base layer contains an additive which is incompatible with polypropylene. The process includes stretching of the film, and during the stretching step, the polymer matrix is torn open around the additive particles to form vacuoles which give the base layer a degree of opacity.
