  • Patent number: 4458938
Abstract: The disclosure concerns a sun visor for a vehicle and concerns various ways in which a piece of covering material is clamped in place over the exterior of the sun visor body. In all embodiments, the border of the piece of material is clamped in a groove in the sun visor body. The groove may be around the periphery. Alternatively, the visor body is comprised of two facing plates and the material is clamped between the plates. Pins on one plate may hold the material in place. Various clamping devices for clamping the border of the material between the plates are disclosed, including simply clamping the two plates together with the material between them, a mortise and tenon joint at the borders of the plates, a reinforcing strip between the plates which clamps the border of the material and the material having a drawstring around its hem for pulling the border tightly into the visor body.

  • Patent number: 4451076
Abstract: The disclosure concerns an outer support bracket for use in the body of a vehicle for supporting the outer support shaft of a sun visor. The sun visor is supported by a swivel bearing at one end and by an outer support shaft at the other end. The bracket for the latter includes a base part secured to the vehicle body and a head part swingably mounted to the base part. A support opening extending across the head part receives the outer support shaft of the sun visor body and the head part is movable for reorienting the support opening to the orientation of the outer support shaft. A radially positioned introduction slot permits introduction of the support shaft into the support opening. The head part is swingable on the base part around a semi-cylindrically curved set of cooperating surfaces on the head part and base part and the head part projects from within the base part to the exterior of the base part through an opening in the base part.

  • Patent number: 4428612
Abstract: The disclosure concerns a swivel mount for the sun visor of an automotive vehicle. There is a mount housing including a tubular part that passes around the mounting shaft of the sun visor and a part that extends away from that shaft receiving part of the mount housing. The mount housing might be an integral molding or a bent sheet metal part. A cutout is defined along the length of the mount housing for receiving a detent spring therein. The cutout includes a web that divides the cutout into a top part near the mounting shaft and a bottom part. An end stop is located near the bottom of the mount housing. The reinforcing insert for the visor body might extend through the mount housing and define the end stop. The detent spring is U-shaped, with one arm passing down the outside of the cutout web and the end stop at one side of the mount housing.

  • Patent number: 4417761
Abstract: The invention concerns the swivel bearing of a sun visor for an automotive vehicle. The swivel bearing connects the body of the sun visor with a mounting shaft for the sun visor. A protective housing comprised of injection molded plastic surrounds the swivel bearing housing. The protective housing is a single piece comprised of two halves which are hinged together along one edge and are clipped together at their opposite edge to surround the swivel bearing housing. The exterior of the protective housing is profiled so that all edges, corners and any other deformed part thereof has an outer contour radius of at least 3.2 mm. for eliminating sharp edges at the swivel bearing. The protective housing has an interior contour adapted to the outer contour of the swivel bearing housing.

  • Patent number: 4378129
Abstract: The invention concerns a sun visor for an automotive vehicle, or the like, which is adapted to safety requirements. The visor body has a frame that is flush with the outer surface of the sun visor body. The sun visor has a mirror in the visor body that is protected by a cover. The cover is swivelably mounted to the visor body frame to swivel between its open and closed conditions. A separately swivelable control knob selectively locks closed and permits opening of the cover. The control knob has a recess for capturing the free edge of the cover and swiveling of the control knob with the edge of the cover in the recess locks the cover closed. A detent locks the knob in the open condition. The cover is an integral unit including a pin that is received in a hole in the frame for supporting the cover, the swiveling cover itself and a hinge between the attached and swiveling portions of the cover.

  • Patent number: 4364597
Abstract: The disclosure concerns a sun visor for an automotive mirror having a mirror supported in a recess of the sun visor and the mirror being back lighted. The mirror is supported in a light-transmitting frame that is positioned in the recess, whereby the light behind the mirror is transmitted to illuminate the mirror. A covering over the mirror includes a covering frame and a cover flap hingedly supported on the covering frame and pivotable between positions uncovering and covering the mirror. The hinge is located at the bottom of the covering frame so that the cover flap opens downwardly. A clip connection, or the like, holds the cover flap closed to the covering frame. An operator for the light source switch is positioned to be engaged by the cover flap when the latter is closed for thereby moving the light source between the on and off positions.

  • Patent number: 4364598
Abstract: The disclosure concerns a sun visor for a vehicle, or the like, including a visor body which is stiffened by an embedded wire reinforcing insert. The insert is of generally U-shape, bent outwardly at its free ends to define laterally protruding bearing pins. There are two spaced apart bearing blocks supported on the vehicle and the bearing blocks have opposed end faces which are rubbingly engaged by the respective leg of the U, which resists swiveling of the visor body. Each bearing pin extends to a receptacle provided in its bearing block. One end face of a bearing block engaging one leg of the U is shaped to bias the respective leg toward the other leg of the U, which increases the resistance to swiveling of the visor body. A plastic sheath consisting of two L-shaped, hinged together halves in hingedly closed and fastened shut over each bearing pin and the adjacent section of the leg of the U.

  • Patent number: 4363511
Abstract: The invention is concerned with a hollow mounting pin for a sun visor for an automotive vehicle. The mounting pin is bent. One leg is affixed to the body of the automotive vehicle. The other leg serves as one part of the swivel bearing for the sun visor body. An electric conductor passes through the hollow mounting pin. At the end of the hollow mounting pin located at the swivel bearing on the visor body, a receptacle is formed. An electric switch contact is supported in the receptacle. The contact includes a contact projection that extends through the wall of the receptacle. A cooperating strap is defined on the visor body. As the visor body is swiveled, the strap selectively contacts or is out of contact with the contact projection. The electric switch contact in the receptacle is prevented from pivoting with respect to the receptacle by the contact projection and/or by appropriate complementary profiling of the electric switch contact and the receptacle.

  • Patent number: 4272118
Abstract: The invention concerns a novel electric connection to a light source, or the like, on a sun visor for a vehicle. At one edge of the sun visor body, there is a pivot pin that is supported in a preferably plastic support that is held in the sun visor body. The pivot pin is received in a socket held to the body of the vehicle and which includes electtric contacts in it. An electric lead extends through the pivot pin and leads to the light source. The pivot pin has a radially extending groove. A contact element extends from outside the groove into the groove for contacting the lead therein. The contact element extends out of the groove and may be wrapped around the pivot pin for engaging a corresponding contact element in the socket, which contact element is connected, in turn, to an electric wire in the vehicle electrical system. Various forms of contact elements for the pivot pin are disclosed.
