  • Patent number: 9226732
Abstract: Devices for extracting bone marrow from a bone of a patient are disclosed. The device includes a housing defined in part by a cannula and a hollow needle disposed within the cannula. The hollow needle is movable axially relative to the cannula and extendable therefrom. The hollow needle is configured to aspirate bone marrow within a bone. A depth adjustment mechanism coupled to the hollow needle and the cannula is used to adjust the depth of the hollow needle relative to the cannula to control the distance of the needle within the bone. The device is attachable to an extraction device to extract bone marrow from the patient through the hollow needle. Methods of using these devices and methods of extracting bone marrow are also included.

  • Publication number: 20140311988
Abstract: Platelet rich plasma and/or platelet concentrate is prepared by placing whole blood in a first chamber of a sterile processing disposable having two chambers. The processing disposable is subjected to a first centrifugation to separate red blood cells, and the resulting platelet rich plasma supernatant is decanted to the second chamber. The processing disposable is subjected to a second centrifugation to concentrate platelets. A volume of the platelet poor plasma supernatant in the second chamber is removed, and the platelets are re-suspended in the remaining plasma. The second chamber may contain anticoagulant to preclude aggregation of the platelets.

  • Publication number: 20130131546
Abstract: Methods and systems for collecting and processing bone marrow in a closed system are provided. The systems and methods include the use of a bone marrow aspiration needle and guide configured to puncture cortical bone. Tube assembly is in fluid flow communication with the bone marrow aspiration needle. A first syringe is in fluid flow communication with the tube assembly and the bone aspiration. A bone marrow aspirate collection container in fluid flow communication with the first syringe and the tube assembly. A second syringe is connected to the collection container, a bone marrow aspirate filter in fluid flow communication with the tube assembly to filter bone marrow aspirate from the first syringe into the collection container. At least one flow controller is configured to direct the flow of bone marrow aspirate between the aspiration needle, the first syringe and the collection container.

  • Patent number: 7754494
Abstract: A method, and apparatus for transferring a fluid to a sterile field includes the use of a sterile enclosure (58, 68) housing a syringe (40). The enclosure (58, 68) is made in two parts, and allows the syringe (40) to be operated while it is in the enclosure. When it is desired to pass the fluids to the sterile field, the enclosure is separated into at least two parts to allow the syringe to be removed. This removal of the syringe is done such that the user in the non-sterile field does not touch the syringe. Thus, the syringe, and fluid therein are easily transferred to the sterile field.

  • Publication number: 20060261014
Abstract: Increased fibrinogen yields are obtained by adding a precipitating agent to plasma having a high platelet concentration, such as platelet rich plasma. The precipitating agent may be any of several known agents, including polyethylene glycol and ammonium sulfate. The platelet rich plasma is obtained in the preferred embodiment by subjecting plasma to “soft spin” centrifugation of about 580G. An automatic, multiple decanting and multiple-speed centrifuge is preferably used to separate anti-coagulated whole blood into the platelet rich plasma component and red blood cells. The proteins, preferably fibrinogen, FXIII, and FVIII, in the platelet rich component are precipitated, and the proteins and platelets are then concentrated by further centrifugation.

  • Publication number: 20040208786
Abstract: A method for the preparation of a stable autologous or homologous coagulant from whole blood is disclosed. The direct precipitation of anticoagulated whole blood obviates the need for a plasma isolation step with unexpected results. The autologous or homologous coagulant produced by the method of the present invention demonstrated clotting times equivalent to commercially available bovine thrombin and human thrombin preparations, with improved kinetics of growth factor release from activated platelets over preparations of bovine thrombin.
