Patent number: 9510171Abstract: A method, apparatus, and system for provisioning a mobile station with a destination communication address, such as a public safety answering point address for instance, during de-registration of the mobile station from a cellular radio access network (RAN). During de-registration of the mobile station from the cellular RAN, a location of the mobile station may be determined. The location may then be used as a basis to look up a communication address of a PSAP or other such destination, and the communication address may be provided to the mobile station in a de-registration response message, or the de-registration response message may be otherwise used as a basis to convey the communication address to the mobile station. Thereafter, when the mobile station seeks to place an emergency service call while not registered with the RAN, the mobile station may conveniently retrieve the communication address and place the call to that address.Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 2012Date of Patent: November 29, 2016Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Tim W. Sill, Louie E. Wingo, Sanjay K. Sharma

Patent number: 9264955Abstract: Disclosed are a method, apparatus, and system for managing frequency use in a system while engaged in multiple communications. When a wireless communication device (WCD) is engaging in a first communication on a first frequency, the WCD receives a request for the WCD to engage in a second communication. Responsive to receiving the request, the WCD hands off the first communication from the first frequency to a second frequency and engages in the second communication on the first frequency. The method may thereby help to reduce likelihood of interference.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 2012Date of Patent: February 16, 2016Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Louie E. Patent number: 9049639Abstract: While a mobile node is engaged in a communication session via a first air interface channel, the user of the mobile node requests a vertical handoff. In response to the user's handoff request, the mobile node goes into a dormant mode to release the first air interface channel. The mobile node then acquires a second air interface channel, which may have a higher data rate than the first air interface channel, and continues the communication session via the second air interface channel. The mobile node may also determine that a vertical handoff may be available, e.g., by checking a preferred roaming list (PRL), and then indicate to the user that a vertical handoff may be available.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 2011Date of Patent: June 2, 2015Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Michael T. Lundy, Benjamin P. Blinn, Kevin E. Hunter, Louie E. Wingo

Patent number: 8873395Abstract: Quality of Service (QoS) priority values and thresholds are defined for various service types assignable to user equipment (UE devices) including multiple bandclass devices. The QoS thresholds can be used for determining whether resources of a default or alternate bandclass should be used for a new call request or whether a timer should be initiated to wait for additional resources to become available. A default QoS priority values can be assigned to each service type and used for voice calls requested by UE devices. QoS priority values with lower priority can be used for data calls. The priority of priority values can decrease as the data rate for the data calls increases. Thresholds for blocking call requests can be increased or decreased to improve likelihood that resources for call requests with higher priority service types are granted at the expense granting resources for call requests with lower priority service types.Type: GrantFiled: January 23, 2013Date of Patent: October 28, 2014Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: John W. Prock, Kurt M. Landuyt, Louie E. Wingo, Kevin L. Butler

Patent number: 8768402Abstract: A mobile station stores power-limit data that identifies one or more defined locations and associates each defined location with a respective transmit power limit. The one or more defined locations may, for example, correspond to locations of high-priority signal transmitters, such as transmitters that transmit signals used for public safety communications. In response to a trigger condition, the mobile station determines whether its current location is proximate to any of the one or more defined locations in the power-limit data. The trigger condition may occur when a current transmit power level of the mobile station is greater than or equal to a predetermined threshold value. If the mobile station's current location is proximate to a defined location in the power-limit data, the mobile station controls its transmit power level so that it does not exceed a transmit power limit associated with the defined location.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 2012Date of Patent: July 1, 2014Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Louie E. Patent number: 8712411Abstract: In systems and methods of varying a latency timer in a wireless communication system, a network identifier associated with an access node in communication with a wireless device is received at a communication node during the establishment of a communication session between a wireless device and the communication node. At least one latency timer criteria is determined based on the network identifier, and at least one latency timer is adjusted according to the latency timer criteria.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 2011Date of Patent: April 29, 2014Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Dante A. Puliatti, Trinh D. Vu, Robert P. Dill, John D. Sumler, Harry H. Lai, Louie E. Wingo

Patent number: 8503405Abstract: A method and corresponding device are disclosed for varying setup mode based on reported latency at a target device. The target device or its serving network may report a latency characteristic associated with the target device, such as an indication of the air interface protocol and/or slot cycle being used by the target device, and an initiating device or communication server may use the reported latency as a basis to decide whether to operate in (i) a normal setup mode when setting up a communication session with the target device or (ii) an optimistic setup mode when setting up a communication session with the target device.Type: GrantFiled: January 13, 2011Date of Patent: August 6, 2013Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Louie E. Wingo, Harry H. Lai, Cesar Perez, John D. Sumler

Patent number: 7904079Abstract: A method, system, and apparatus for monitoring user-interface operation. One or more wireless communication devices, such as cell phones, will automatically log user-interface events (such as key-presses) and user-interface states (such as display screen state) and will transmit the log-data, via a wireless link, to a central server. The server will then compile the log-data and generate useful output reports regarding user-interface operation. Such reports can assist device manufacturers and distributors (e.g., wireless carriers), triggering changes in user-interface design so as to improve user experience.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 2005Date of Patent: March 8, 2011Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Michael T. Patent number: 7865205Abstract: A mobile station has a plurality of modes for processing incoming push-to-talk (PTT) audio communications. A first PTT mode is a “forced audio” mode, in which the mobile station plays PTT audio communications automatically. A second PTT mode is a “polite” mode, in which the mobile station plays PTT audio communications only after acceptance by the user. A “white list” identifies any parties that are allowed to communicate with the mobile station using the first PTT mode. A PTT audio communication from an initiator that is not identified in the white list is processed using the second PTT mode, even if the first PTT mode is requested. In addition, a PTT audio communication may be processed using the second PTT mode if the mobile station's speaker volume level is below a threshold value.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 2007Date of Patent: January 4, 2011Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Michael T Lundy, Louie E Wingo, Harry H Lai, Daniel J Cureton
