  • Patent number: 10746099
Abstract: A turbocharger includes a compressor housing, turbine housing, and center housing between the compressor and turbine housings. A turbine wheel is disposed in the turbine housing on a turbine shaft. A compressor wheel having a shank is disposed in the compressor housing on the turbine shaft. The shank has outer and reduced portions. The reduced portion has a smaller diameter than the outer portion. A backplate is mounted to the compressor housing adjacent the compressor wheel and defines a stepped cylindrical bore with a maximum diameter portion and a minimum diameter portion having a smaller diameter than the maximum portion. The outer portion is disposed in the maximum portion. The reduced portion is disposed in the minimum portion. The outer diameter of the shank is greater than or equal to the minimum diameter of the backplate, and the stepped cylindrical bore and the shank define a variable width gap.

  • Patent number: 10113587
Abstract: An improved thrust bearing for a turbocharger includes a first bearing surface, a second bearing surface, an internal passageway, a primary pad, and a plurality of secondary pads. The internal passageway fluidly connects the first and second bearing surfaces. The primary pad may be defined on the first bearing surface. The primary pad further defines a first aperture in fluid communication with the internal passageway and an oil feed defined in a turbocharger housing. The plurality of secondary pads may also be defined on the first bearing surface. Each secondary pad in the plurality of secondary pads may include a secondary surface area which is smaller than the primary surface area of the primary pad.

  • Publication number: 20180156064
Abstract: Provided herein are thermal barrier coatings (TBC) and turbocharger heat shields comprising the same. The turbocharger heat shield can be metallic and include a front face having an aperture capable of accepting a turbocharger shaft. The TBC can include a bond coat applied to the turbocharger heat shield, an interfacial layer contacting the bond coat, and a ceramic top coat contacting the interfacial layer. The bond coat of the TBC can comprise nickel, at least about 4% aluminum, up to about 36% chromium. One or more of the one or more of the interfacial layer and the ceramic top coat can comprise aluminum oxide, titanium oxide, spinel, yttria-stabilized zirconia, gadolinium zirconate, and combinations thereof. One or more of the interfacial layer and the ceramic top coat can be free from yttria-stabilized zirconia and gadolinium zirconate. The TBC can have a total thickness of at least about 100 ?m.

  • Patent number: 9003793
Abstract: A turbocharger assembly includes a compressor assembly, a turbine wheel, a shaft, a bearing assembly, and a cooling gas conduit. The compressor assembly includes a compressor impeller. The compressor impeller includes an outermost impeller edge and has a maximum cross-sectional dimension at the outermost impeller edge. The shaft interconnects the compressor impeller and the turbine wheel. The bearing assembly surrounds at least a portion of the shaft. The cooling gas conduit is disposed in fluid communication with the compressor assembly and the bearing assembly. At least a portion of the cooling gas conduit is disposed adjacent the outermost impeller edge such that the cooling gas conduit is configured to receive a portion of intake gases flowing along the outermost impeller edge and guide the portion of the intake gases toward the bearing assembly to cool the bearing assembly.

  • Publication number: 20090306955
Abstract: Methods and systems for analyzing rolling element bearing systems are provided. A graphical user interface (GUI) is rendered on a display device. The graphical user interface includes a plurality of characteristics of the rolling element bearing system and a plurality of widgets associated with the characteristics. An indication of a value is received with each of the widgets. Each value is representative of the respective characteristic of the rolling element bearing system. A first analysis of the rolling element bearing system is performed based on the values with a first rolling element bearing solver. A second analysis of the rolling element bearing system is performed based on the values with a second rolling element bearing solver. Results of at least one of the first and second analyses are displayed on the display device.

  • Publication number: 20060115193
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for retaining bearing balls in a bearing assembly. For example, a cage assembly may comprise an annular cage having a plurality of pockets in which to snap-in bearing balls via openings having a width less than the diameter of the bearing balls. A retainer ring for the cage may have an inner diameter that is equal to the inner diameter of the cage. The cage assembly may comprise a plurality of cage webs, wherein each cage web is located between two adjacent pockets, and each cage web may be tapered (either radially, axially, or both radially and axially). The plurality of cage webs may be tapered such that the cage webs are tapered towards a distal end of each cage web and away from a proximal end of each cage web. An outer land may pilot the bearing assembly.
