    Abstract: A therapeutic ultrasonic instrument is provided for hemostatic cutting and/or cauterizing of tissue. A preferred embodiment provides an end effector which grasps tissue while a cutting element energized by ultrasonic energy is passed through the tissue to cut and cauterize the tissue while it is being held by the tissue grasping portion of the end effector. One embodiment further includes staples which are applied to the tissue as well.
