  • Publication number: 20050067901
Abstract: A microelectromechanical system (MEMS) device is used to transfer power from a source generator to a power generator that delivers electrical power to a load, while maintaining electrical isolation between the source generator and power generator for size critical applications where transformers or coupling capacitors would not be practical, but where electrical isolation is desired.

  • Publication number: 20050068989
Abstract: A microelectromechanical system (MEMS) strain gauge includes at least one flexible arm that can be caused to oscillate. Transverse strain on the arm changes the resonant frequency of the arm, providing an indication of the transverse strain of the substrate.

  • Patent number: 5547590
Abstract: An ultraviolet-based or dual mode water purifying system operates under household water pressure to provide a batch treatment of contaminated water. Treated water is stored in a pressurized reservoir, from which it may be released for use. A treatment cycle is initiated by a drop in pressure within the system, which occurs when sufficient water has been withdrawn from the reservoir. The pressure drop is detected by a pressure gauge linked to a UV lamp dimmer, which causes the UV lamp to change from a reduced-output standby mode to an operative mode. The dimmer may be further linked to a thermostatic switch positioned adjacent the lamp, to reduce the output of the lamp when the temperature exceeds a predetermined level, and to a backwash event control, to increase the lamp output to the operative level during filter backwash.

  • Patent number: 5481114
Abstract: The simultaneous selective detection of neutrons and X or gamma photons is disclosed, employing two scintillators. One scintillator uses a first doped scintillation detector that is sensitive to neutrons, while the second doped scintillation device is sensitive to X or gamma photons whereby the scintillations occurring at the two devices are in distinct and separate energy bands.

  • Patent number: 5474748
Abstract: A sterilizing apparatus is provided to simultaneously generate ozone and expose a contaminated fluid to ionizing radiation, such as UV radiation, for the sterilization of water. The device includes an air supply conduit to circulate current of air through an ozonation chamber, with the conduit being routed through a water exposure chamber, wherein the air is cooled by the relatively lower temperature of the water at the same time as the water is being decontaminated by exposure to sterilizing radiation. The conduit continues into the air exposure chamber, where it is positioned adjacent the UV lamp to dry the air by the warmth generated by the lamp. The second part may comprise a metal tube having a helical portion coiled about an end region of a tubular UV lamp, and a straight portion positioned adjacent a middle region of the lamp, in order to accommodate the differential heat output of the lamp at the different regions thereof.

  • Patent number: 5393981
Abstract: An apparatus for the simultaneous, selective detection of neutrons and X or gamma photons including a photomultiplier, a first scintillator sensitive to the neutrons and a second scintillator sensitive to the x or gamma photons. The apparatus also includes an attenuating light guide (situated between the first and second scintillators) for guiding the photons produced by the first scintillator to the photomultiplier and for attenuating the radiation associated with these photons. The attenuating light guide facilitates the separation of the energy bands associated with each of the first scintillator, the second scintillator and the background noise of the photomultiplier. By separating energy bands, detection of each radiation element is less complex. The apparatus also includes a neutron filter (situated between the attenuating light guide and the second scintillator) which functions to reduce the occurrence of neutrons interacting with the second scintillator, thus facilitating energy band separation.

  • Patent number: 5376265
Abstract: An gas/fluid contactor is provided for reacting water and other fluids with an ozone-containing gas. The contactor comprises an elongate tubular reaction chamber having a gas/fluid combining chamber adjacent the inlet to draw an ozone-containing gas into the device and to provide an initial mixing between the gas and the fluid. One or more mixing chambers are positioned within the reaction chamber, each being filled with a material that provides a matrix of solid elements with interstices of between 0.1 and 2.0 mm. in diameter between the solid elements.

  • Patent number: 4976426
Abstract: An exercise device offers different levels of exercise to an individual and can be arranged as an exercise device for bedridden patients and those in different stages of rehabilitation. The device comprises an exercise head having at least one pair of crank arms for rotation of limbs of the individual about an axial shaft. A hydraulic motor is linked to the axial shaft to rotate the crank arms with hydraulic power source for the motor. Rotational speed of the axial shaft is set by a speed adjustment arrangement associated with the hydraulic motor. A force adjustment system adjusts the force applied to the limbs through the crank arms to rotate the axial shaft beyond a set rotational speed. Variation in the speed of the axial shaft is sensed by a speed sensing arrangement. A system for sensing force to sense variation in force applied to the crank arms by the limbs of the individual.
