Patent number: 4814411Abstract: Increased reactivity of isocyanate terminated polyether prepolymers with metal halide salt complexes of methylenedianiline is obtained when the polyether intermediates are modified to contain an effective amount of ethylene oxide. A desired intermediate is poly(oxypropylene) diol or triol which are modified to contain ethylene oxide units therein and subsequently reacted with a polyisocyanate such as MDI, that is 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate, or TDI, that is, toluene diisocyanate. A desired metal halide salt complex of methylenedianiline is the sodium chloride salt complex (MDA.sub.3 -NaCl), dispersed in dioctylphthalate (50/50 wt/wt).Type: GrantFiled: February 8, 1988Date of Patent: March 21, 1989Assignees: The Firestone Tire & Rubber Company, The Dow Chemical CompanyInventors: Tristram W. Bethea, James Oziomek, Joseph H. Tazewell, Douglas K. Hillshafer, Louis W. Meyer

Patent number: 4611044Abstract: This invention is an improvement in a process for preparing a polyurethane backed substrate whereby a reacting polyurethane forming mixture comprising at least one polyahl and at least one polyisocyanate as applied to a substrate and subsequently curing thereon to form an attached polyurethane backing. The improvement which is this invention comprises employing an organoiron or organobismuth catalyst for said polyurethane forming mixture. The organoiron or organobismuth catalyst is employed in an amount such that the polymer forming mixture exhibits the viscosity of not greater than about 20,000 cps 2 minutes after the polyahl and polyisocyanates are contacted in the presence of said catalyst at 20.degree.-50.degree. C. and the polyurethane forming mixture cures to a tack free state at an elevated temperature in the presence of said catalyst in less than about 8 minutes.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 1985Date of Patent: September 9, 1986Assignee: The Dow Chemical CompanyInventors: Louis W. Meyer, Linda M. McKinney, Don H. Kelley

Patent number: 4588643Abstract: Coated internal surfaces of molding apparatus and a process for reducing the amount of sticking of material on the internal surface of a molding apparatus are disclosed. The coated substrate and the process both employ release compositions having very low surface tensions comprising (1) a linear or branched polymer containing ionic functional moieties and (2) a perfluorocarbon compound having a counterionic character. Such compositions dissolve in volatile acidic or basic solutions and result in salt precipitates which adhere to substrates upon the evaporation of the volatile acidic or basic solution.Type: GrantFiled: March 18, 1983Date of Patent: May 13, 1986Assignee: The Dow Chemical CompanyInventors: Donald L. Schmidt, Louis W. Meyer, Demetrius Urchick
