  • Patent number: 8776037
Abstract: A method is disclosed to update multiple devices disposed in a computing system comprising a plurality of devices. The method receives a request to perform a firmware image update for a plurality of designated target devices, where each of those designated target devices comprises a first firmware image, and where the request comprises a second firmware image. The method uploads the second firmware image to a shared memory device, where each of the designated target devices is in communication with that shared memory device, and broadcasts an update command to each of the plurality of devices. The method determines the device state of each of the designated target devices, and if each of the designated target devices reports either an operational device state or an error device state, then the method reports that the firmware update is complete.

  • Patent number: 8392904
Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for efficiently collecting code updates. The apparatus includes a generation module that identifies sites that provide code updates based on information about the computing system and its components that is already stored in the system. A supplement module identifies additional sites by monitoring Internet traffic on the computing system and looking for certain keywords, patterns, and regular expressions in visited sites. The user may also manually enter sites to supplement the sites automatically identified by the generation module and the supplement module. A monitor module monitors the identified sites for changes and determines when a new code update is available. A notification module notifies the user of the code updates when the monitor module determines that they have become available. The apparatus may also include a download module that automatically downloads new code updates for the user to install.

  • Publication number: 20100257412
Abstract: A method to provide an alert notification and a reconcile action to a client computing system, the alert notification being responsive to an error condition in a target computing system, and the reconcile action being responsive to the alert notification, wherein the method supplies a client computing system and a target computing system, wherein the target computing system is in communication with the client computing system. The method further forms an alert notification responsive to an error condition detected in the target computing system, and generates a reconcile action responsive to the alert notification. The method provides the alert notification and the reconcile action to the client computing system. The client computing system returns a selected reconcile action, which is implemented by the target computing system, wherein that implementing step is performed without logging into said target computing system.

  • Patent number: 7761735
Abstract: Provided are techniques for restoring firmware. A first programmable hardware device determines that a second programmable hardware device needs a valid firmware image, retrieves a copy of the valid firmware image from an external memory, and sends the valid firmware image to the second programmable hardware device via a private communication link, wherein the private communication link enables private communication between the first programmable hardware device and the second programmable hardware device. The second programmable hardware device restores existing firmware using the valid firmware image.

  • Patent number: 7756049
Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are provided for controlling link status changes across multiple independent control modules. The apparatus includes a copy services module configured to control multiple link adapters, each configured to establish multiple communication links between a source and a target storage device. The adapter transmits a link status change notification to the copy services module and starts a timer upon transmitting the link status change notification. The copy services module simultaneously processes link status change notifications from a plurality of communication links. The system includes a communications network and a plurality of storage devices having the above described apparatus.

  • Patent number: 7512616
Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for communicating binary data using a self-descriptive binary data structure. The binary data structure also may be referred to as a microcode reconstruct and boot (MRB) image. The binary data structure includes a plurality of data segments, a target data set, and a data structure descriptor. Each of the data segments has a data segment header and data field. The target data set is stored within the data field and may be an executable. The data structure descriptor is descriptive of the binary data structure and identifies the location of the target data set within the data field. The binary data structure is self-descriptive in that the location of an individual target data set may be identified by the data structure descriptor.
