  • Patent number: 9067269
Abstract: A gear shaping machine is provided. The gear shaping machine includes a pair of horizontally reciprocating gear shaping heads mounted to a column. Each gear shaping head includes a spindle assembly including an integral rotary drive for indexing the spindle. The spindle assembly is carried by a spindle slide. The spindle slide also carries a plurality of bearing blocks to allow for sliding movement of the gear shaping head relative to rails mounted on the column. A linear drive arrangement is operably coupled between each gear shaping head and the column. The linear guide arrangement allows for controlled linear translation of each gear shaping head independently of one another. Each gear shaping head also includes a back-off mechanism for independently moving the spindle assembly toward the workpiece during a cutting stroke and away from the workpiece during a return stroke of each gear shaping head.

  • Patent number: 8985917
Abstract: A cutting machine for gear shaping or the like is provided. The cutting machine includes a gear shaping head. The gear shaping head has a ram that is guided by and reciprocates along a linear guide mounted between a saddle of the gear shaping head and the ram. At least one linear motor reciprocates the ram along a stroke axis relative to the saddle. The ram also carries a rotary drive and a spindle that reciprocate in unison with the ram. The rotary drive directly drives the spindle to journal the spindle through incremental angular positions during gear shaping.

  • Patent number: 7097399
Abstract: A cutting machine includes linear electrical actuation for controlling linear reciprocating movement of a spindle and cutting tool. The cutting machine is suited for gear shaping cutting operations and the like. Linear electrical actuation may be used to control position of a hydraulic valve within the spindle, which controls hydraulic actuation and linear movement of the spindle. Linear electrical actuation may also be used to pivot the spindle to relieve the cutting and/or during the cutting stroke for gear crowning operations. A rotary actuator is also disclosed as incorporated into the pivoting saddle of such a cutting machine.

  • Patent number: 6178608
Abstract: A rotary transfer machine or rotary index table having an outer carriage ring subject to rotation about a central support frame. The rotary transfer machine includes a plurality of machining stations spaced at radial intervals about the carriage ring. The machining stations can provide outside machining stations on the outside of the carriage ring and inside machining stations mounted to the support frame inside of the carriage ring. The rotary transfer machine includes a plurality of pallets mounted around the carriage ring. Each pallet includes a clamp for holding workpieces to be machined therebetween. Each pallet includes a clearance opening which allows for cutting tools to extend through the pallets to machine the back side of the work piece and to allow for machining the work piece from all six sides.

  • Patent number: 5055087
Abstract: A variable speed motor rotates the spindle of a machine tool by way of a two-speed transmission. The transmission includes two endless belts extending directly between the spindle and the output shaft of the motor. One belt is connected to the output shaft and is adapted to be selectively coupled to the spindle by a clutch which is coaxial with the spindle. The other belt is connected to the spindle and is adapted to be selectively coupled to the output shaft by a second clutch which is coaxial with the shaft.
