  • Patent number: 10946438
Abstract: A system for casting a length of a pole of a tubular shape with molten metal. The system comprises a crucible for containing the molten metal; a pouring spout fluidly connected to the crucible; and a plunger for plunging in the crucible to increase level of the molten metal in the crucible and thereby forcing a flow of the molten metal from the crucible to the pouring spout. The system further comprises a casting ring for receiving the molten metal poured out of the pouring spout; a motor for rotating the casting ring; a cooling assembly for cooling the molten metal; and a pulling assembly for pulling the pole out of and away from the casting ring as the molten metal solidifies.

  • Patent number: 7172664
Abstract: A method is described for making an aluminum alloy foil suitable for application to fins used in heat exchangers. The method comprises providing an aluminum alloy composition containing about 0.27% to about 0.55% by weight of iron, about 0.06% to about 0.55% by weight of silicon and optionally up to about 0.20% by weight of copper; continuously casting a coiled strip from the molten aluminum alloy; cold rolling the continuously cast coil to a final gauge of about 0.076 mm to about 0.152 mm and partially annealing the aluminum alloy sheet at a temperature below about 260° C., with a maximum overheat of about 10° C. to anneal the aluminum alloy foil substantially without any recrystallization.

  • Patent number: 6350532
Abstract: The invention relates to a recyclable aluminum foil. The foil is made of an alloy containing 0.2%-0.5% Si, 0.4%-0.8% Fe, 0.1%-0.3% Cu, and 0.05%-0.3% Mn by weight. with the balance aluminum and incidental impurities. The foil contains at least about 2% by weight of strengthening particulates and has at least about 0.1% by weight of the copper and/or manganese retained in solid solution. The invention also relates to a method of manufacturing a sheet of aluminum based on an alloy which involves continuously casting an alloy of the above composition to form a sheet of alloy, coiling said sheet of alloy, cold rolling the sheet of alloy, interannealing the alloy after a first pass of the cold rolling; and further cold rolling the alloy to a final desired gauge. The foil, which is suitable for household use, has improved strength due to a larger quantity of dispersoids fortified by elements in solid solution, and can be recycled with other alloy scrap.

  • Patent number: 5322546
Abstract: An apparatus for filtering molten material, such as a molten metal-ceramic particle mixture, includes a porous cloth filter located so that the mixture must pass through the cloth filter, and a mechanical filter shaker that prevents the accumulation of filtered solids on the porous cloth filter. Where a further degree of filtration is required, there is a second filter located so that material leaving the porous cloth filter passes through the second filter after it passes through the porous cloth filter, and a mechanism that prevents an accumulation of filtered solids on the second filter. The second filter is desirably a porous media filter.

  • Patent number: 4290590
Abstract: A process for sparging molten metal comprises passing gas bubbles upwardly through a series of spaced nozzles arranged in a trough or furnace, the nozzles being arranged to prevent lateral spread of emergent bubbles so as to hold down the bubble size to a controlled size and thus increase the surface area/volume relationship to a desired value. The apparatus employed preferably is embodied in a refractory plate having a series of spaced protrusions or ribs on the upper face. Spaced gas orifices are formed in the protrusions or ribs. The lateral spread of the bubbles is checked or hindered when the gas/metal interface of growing bubbles reaches the sides of the protrusions or ribs.

  • Patent number: 4277280
Abstract: For the removal of alkali metal and alkaline earth metal contaminants molten aluminium (including Mg-free aluminium alloys), is passed through an active bed of particles of material containing aluminium fluoride, maintained continuously immersed in molten aluminium. Alkali metal and alkaline earth metal contaminants react and may release insoluble molten reaction products. In order to avoid plugging of the active bed and achieve removal of molten reaction products the molten metal is preferably passed upwardly successively through an inactive filter layer, an active bed layer and a further inactive filter layer.
